Wellcome Trust, Science Museum and Pervasive Media Studios to host ExPlay Game Jam 2012

This October, budding games developers and designers from across the UK are invited to take part in two-day Game Jam at the Science Museum in London, and The Pervasive Media Studios in Bristol. Open to teams and individuals, the Game Jam will be led by expert bio-medical scientists from the Wellcome Trust, who will reveal a theme at the start of the 24-hour period during which participants will work round the clock to create a brand new, playable game. Completed games will be judged by experts, and winners from each location will be able to showcase their games to the public at the ExPlay Games Festival in Bath in November 2012.

The Game Jam will take place on 5 and 6 October, with the theme, provided by the Wellcome Trust, announced on the evening of Friday 5 October and two locations linked by a live audio-visual feed. The Game Jam is organised by ExPlay Festival, hosted by the Dana Centre at the Science Museum in London and The Pervasive Media Studios in Bristol and curated and funded by The Wellcome Trust.

Participation is free, and keen games creators can find out more and apply to participate at http://www.explay.co.uk/gamejam.

Kat Nilsson, Head of Contemporary Science at the Science Museum, says, “The Science Museum is excited to be hosting the Game Jam. The event brings together creative people of all types to collaborate and make games around scientific themes. With such a diverse group, we’re anticipating some excellent games offering a fresh take on contemporary science knowledge.”

Tomas Rawlings, the Wellcome Trust Games Consultant, said, “This is a really exciting event that the Wellcome Trust's support has enabled to happen.  We're going to be linking two locations - the Pervasive Media Studio in Bristol with the Science Museum in London and running in parallel, also linking the worlds of biomedical science and video gaming.  I can’t wait to see what strange, intriguing and fun creations come out of this collaboration."
