Los Angeles, California – 18 September 2013/… Playland Pictures Inc. today released an exclusive excerpt from its forthcoming video game culture documentary, Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler.
The video picks up with challenger Timothy McVey at the 36-hour mark, as he attempts to regain the title for having a billion point video game high score on arcade game Nibbler. The clip demonstrates what a grueling test of endurance the attempt is for McVey, who gained the record 25 years previously, aged 16, and also shows the impact the gaming marathon has on McVey’s friends and family.
The full story will appear in Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler, which has already reached its Kickstarter post-production funding target, and is aiming for its stretch goals in the final days of the campaign.
Reaching the funding goal of $53K now allows for the already filmed documentary to reach picture lock status, including covering the costs of editing, graphics, sound mixing, color correction and clip license fees. Reaching the first stretch goal of $78K will allow for animation to be included, which will recreate some of the epic and historic moments from Man vs Snake’s incredible story. The second stretch goal of $106K will cover the soundtrack production budget, to allow the sourcing of popular songs and the creation of an original score.
About Man vs Snake
A window into the enduring subculture of competitive classic video gaming, Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler is a funny and compelling feature-length documentary that tells the story of 16 year-old Timothy McVey (the gamer, not the bomber) who in January 1984 was the first person to record the highest score in video game history on a single quarter. Fast-forward 25 years later, and inspired by rumors of a higher score, McVey embarks on an epic quest to regain his title by setting a new world record on Nibbler - a little-known but notorious classic arcade game unique for its ability to register a billion points.
Andrew Seklir & Tim Kinzy, producers and directors at Playland Pictures Inc. (and former Battlestar Galactica editors) have spent five years chronicling this madcap odyssey for Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler. A spiritual companion to 2007’s The King of Kong, this unique and fascinating tale of classic video game history has wrapped principal photography.
Andrew Seklir, Playland Pictures Inc., said:
“In January 1984, with enough caffeine to drop a cow and a few friends to cheer him on, McVey fought fatigue, faulty joysticks, and Nibbler itself for over two days to register, finally, the world's first billion-point score. Our film details McVey's historic achievement and follows his very personal, and at times poignant, present-day journey as he seeks to reclaim his record.”
During the documentary, McVey faces fierce competition from around the world and must fight to overcome his own demons (and the trials of middle age) or risk losing his legacy forever. Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler also reunites audiences with some of their favorite characters from 2007’s documentary The King of Kong: Billy Mitchell (the renowned Donkey Kong champion who was a witness to McVey's first billion-point game) and Walter Day (who founded Twin Galaxies, the arcade where McVey’s original record took place).
Tim Kinzy, Playland Pictures Inc., added:
“With a quirky cast of international characters, a generous helping of profanity, unexpected twists and turns, the film has humor and edge. It not only succeeds in documenting one of the more interesting events from the classic era, but proves to be a powerful tale of the triumph of the human spirit as well.”
Five years in the making, Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler wrapped principal photography this summer and is currently in post-production. The film is seeking finishing funds on Kickstarter and is offering some unique Battlestar Galactica-related rewards as well as an original Man vs Snake movie poster and signed concept artwork by Don Bluth, the legendary animator and video game designer behind Dragon’s Lair, Space Ace and Secret of NIMH.
