Stars and Stripes superhero Captain America is finally getting his very own video game this summer, courtesy of Sega.
Since his early days in the ‘40s, the superhero has become one of Marvel Comics’ most iconic characters with his US flag-inspired armour. Now, he’s the latest to benefit from a blockbuster adaptation for the big screen.
With the First Avenger film out in cinemas on July 29th, Sega is publishing a Captain America third-person action adventure video game – titled Super Soldier – two weeks ahead of its launch.
“Captain America is one of Marvel’s most iconic and favoured characters,” says Sega’s senior product manager Anna Downing.
“Super Soldier is the comic book icon’s first standalone game, making it a must have for any Marvel fan – as they get to wield the Shield of the World’s first Super Soldier like never before.”
The American dream
Super Soldier is set in the movie’s universe and throws players into film-like action sequences, such as somersaulting across ledges or using the shield to send enemies flying. Gameplay is an action-packed blend of combat and platforming.
Players must battle the Iron Cross, the Hydra Army and the evil Red Skull during an alternate World War II. The game also features the voice and likeness of the movie actors, creating a realistic experience.
Using Captain America’s shield is key to progressing, as it provides strong offence and defence. Gamers can take out multiple foes from long range by throwing it, block attacks or deflect fire with it. The iconic shield can even be used to solve environmental puzzles by hitting distant targets, adding an element of depth to the action title.
As a big movie tie-in, expect Captain America: Super Soldier to draw a host of film goers, comic fans and action gamers this summer.
The storyline in Captain America: Super Soldier has been penned by acclaimed Marvel comic writer Christos Gage. He has written books on plenty of other Marvel characters including Iron Man, Avengers and X-Men.
Getting in early
Sega says it is releasing the Captain America game prior to the film in order to capitalise on the hype surrounding the franchise. The movie has been created by the same Marvel studio that produced the Iron Man films.
