Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 - Retail Essentials

MCV looks at the concluding part of the Lords of Shadow Trilogy.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 comes to stores on February 28th.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is the final part in the Lords of Shadow trilogy. Players take on the role of Gabriel Belmont who is resurrected and stranded in a modern world. He must regain all of his powers and defeat Satan.

This time around, Castlevania has an open-world, which can be explored at the player’s leisure. Locations include a modern day city and classic gothic castles. For the first time, the game has a fully controllable camera as opposed to the fixed viewpoints of previous games.

Belmont has a number of different weapons at his disposal, including the ranged Blood Whip. Replacing the magic from previous games are the Chaos Claws, which break enemy defences, and the Void Sword, which replenishes the hero’s health.

The vampire also has new abilities, including controlling foes and turning into mist to avoid enemy attacks. Drinking blood still gives Belmont extra abilities.

The Castlevania series launched in 1986 for the NES and was highly influential, being one of two franchises to write the blueprint for the Metroidvania style of games.

The Lords of Shadow brand started life in 2010. It was originally intended to be a new IP, but ultimately became a reboot of the Castlevania series. It told the story of Gabriel Belmont in his attempt to destroy the evil force known as the Lords of Shadow.

A follow up to this game came in 2013. Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate for the 3DS was a more traditional side-scrolling game, much like the original Castlevania titles. An HD remake came to XBLA and PSN later that year.

Castlevania:?Lords of Shadow 2 marks the conclusion of the popular Lords of Shadow trilogy but is a stunning game in its own right. It is a fitting conclusion to the series, offering over 25 hours of gameplay and is set to be one of the last major games for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Awareness of the title is huge with a great deal of interest emerging in the run up to launch. Anticipation is very high.

Lords of Shadow 2 is a fantastic game that will continually delight and surprise the user.
