The original Spore let gamers create and evolve their own life form – from bacteria to a space-travelling alien.

The original title received a Metacritic score of 84 and spawned a number of spin-offs, which have helped the series shift millions of units. Spore was all about creation and consumers building their own creatures.

However, Darkspore is changing all that. The action RPG allows players to take control of powerful aliens and upgrade them with thousands of body parts, armour and weapons to defeat others.

It features a single-player campaign, four-player     co-op and one-on-one multiplayer matches.

“The Spore series was favourably received by both gamers and the press,” says EA’s product manager Bolu Akindoyin.

“Darkspore is a fast-paced and intense sci-fi action RPG in which players become embroiled in a struggle to save the galaxy from an ancient and powerful evil.

“They can play through the epic campaign solo or co-operatively, or battle their friends head-to-head in fast-paced arena battles.”

There are many character classes and hero types to control in Darkspore. And as gamers progress, new players and aliens emerge, forcing users to change their strategy.

EA has already promoted the game with a demo and hands-on access at Beta Weekend events in the weeks ahead of release.

“Playing definitely is believing and the early preview press coverage has been very encouraging,” adds Akindoyin.
