The role-playing genre has changed enormously over the
past decade.

Slower turn-based systems and heavy in-game statistics are dying out, instead replaced by first-person shooter/RPG hybrids and simpler levelling up systems.

Even long-running RPG franchises such as Final Fantasy now have a much greater emphasis on action.

Dungeon Siege may have been one of the more traditional dungeon crawler RPGs when it arrived on PC in 2002, but it’s about to be opened up to a much larger audience.

The latest game, Dungeon Siege III marks the series’ arrival on consoles. It adds drop-in online multiplayer, as well as a local co-op mode, up-to-date graphics, a continuation of the series’ storyline and improved gameplay over the PC originals.

But more importantly, it retains one key element – the classic ‘party of four’ combat system. And Square Enix is confident there’s still a strong demand for such a dungeon crawler.

“Dungeon Siege III is a classic RPG with all the looting, lore, swords and sorcery you’d expect,” says Square Enix UK’s senior product manager Grant Tasker.

“It has been crafted by a developer with a superb history in the genre, offering both a rich and compelling solo experience as well as seamless drop-in online and offline multiplayer.”

Dungeon masters

Players assume the role of one of four heroes in Dungeon Siege III, fighting for the sake of their fallen comrades to restore the land of Ehb.

RPG mainstays such as randomly generated loot, a myriad of different enemies and an abundance of secret treasure chests to discover will keep genre fans satisfied.

The game also features an all-new AI system and a raft of possible combat tactics for players to master.

This is one of Square’s biggest summer releases and will benefit from plenty of promotional support.

Tasker adds: “The Dungeon Siege III marketing really geared up in March with the sponsorship of Spartacus on Sky 1.

“This outperformed all our expectations by some margin, delivering huge value and a coverage well over our target.”

Sponsoring Spartacus

A six-week sponsorship deal between Square Enix and Sky saw a series of Dungeon Siege III ads air around Spartacus on Sky 1 and Sky 1 HD. It ran from mid-March to late April.

Online and print ads

Site takeovers, roadblocks and more will appear on a number of specialist websites around launch. This runs alongside a print campaign that started in April and ends in June.

Special editions

The Dungeon Siege III Limited Edition includes two exclusive in-game rings and amulets, which Square Enix says won’t be made available in post-release DLC.
Additionally, those who pre-order the game through PC service Steam will receive digital copies of the first two titles in the series for free.

Dungeon Siege history

The first Dungeon Siege established a cult fanbase following its release on PC in 2002. A sequel hit shelves in 2005. Both received a strong critical reception, with Metacritic scores of 86 and 80 respectively. In 2006, a spin-off title – Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony – was released for PSP.
