Max Payne 3

After his first two adventures sold over 7m units, Rockstar Games’ greatest anti-hero Max Payne is returning to consoles after an absence of almost ten years.

Max Payne 3 sees Max’s days at the NYPD behind him, drowning in a sea of booze and painkillers. Offered a way out of his rut, Payne leaves the streets of New York for sunny São Paulo in Brazil, where he takes a job protecting the family of real estate kingpin Rodrigo Branco. But when a street gang kidnaps Branco’s wife, Payne is pulled into a world just as dark as the shadows that haunted his life in New York.

The game retains the bullet time effects that made the action of the first two titles a hit with fans. It also features a revised approach to the franchise’s noir-inspired comic book cut scenes – these now blend seamlessly with the in-game action.

Of course, Max Payne 3 is also the latest triple-A title from Rockstar, which has typically released one big game each summer in recent years, such as Red Dead Redemption (2010) and L.A. Noire (2011).

“This is an exciting franchise we’re bringing back to console and PC, which already has an existing vibrant fanbase, but which will also appeal to a whole new audience of gamers due to the quality and style of the game being delivered,” a Rockstar spokesperson told MCV.

Growing Payne

A multiplayer mode has been added for the first time in the history of the franchise. Gamers can still utilise bullet time, but opponents in their line of sight will also have their movements slowed, making for some tactical bullet time battles.

After building up an adrenaline gauge, players have a series of ‘bursts’ that can be used to gain the upper hand in the heat of battle. For example, the Weapon Dealer burst gives players unlimited ammo.

With a storyline that takes players away from the dark streets associated with the franchise, a fresh multiplayer mode, along with the star quality and appeal of a Rockstar game, Max Payne 3 looks set to continue the success of the franchise. In short, it brings consumers a twisted journey with enough slo-mo action to make Hollywood director Zak Snyder blush.

Marketing Max

Max Payne 3 marks Rockstar’s biggest marketing push to date. Continuing past the PC launch on June 1st, the title will be advertised during the Champions League Final and an outdoor campaign will last two weeks after the game’s release.

Criminal Crossover

The customisable characters in the multiplayer modes are all based around gang members seen in the single-player campaign. Thanks to Rockstar’s Social Club, those who create gangs in Max Payne 3 can look forward to using them again in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto V .

Special Edition

Fans craving extra Max Payne content can look forward to purchasing the Max Payne 3 Special Edition, a pack that includes a copy of the game, the official soundtrack, a collectable 10-inch Max Payne statue, a bullet-shaped keychain, original art prints and the Disorderly Conduct multiplayer weapons pack.

Max sales

Having sold more than 7m units worldwide, the Max Payne franchise has enjoyed a successful past. Along with its first two titles, Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, the series has also spawned a 2008 film adaptation starring Mark Wahlberg.
