Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes - Retail Essentials

MCV looks at the first part of Metal Gear Solid V.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes comes to stores on March 21st.

Ground Zeroes is the first Metal Gear Solid title since 2010’s Peace Walker. It is the second title to make use of Kojima Production’s new Fox Engine. It is also the first main entry to come to the Xbox at the same time as PlayStation.

The title is the first chapter in the full Metal Gear Solid V story, which continues in the upcoming The Phantom Pain. Ground Zeroes’ story is shorter than previous entries in the series, but the play time is extended by side missions.

Players now have the freedom to complete objectives in whatever order they wish, and are not bound by the linear mission structure found in previous games.

This game picks up where Peace Walker left off – Big Boss has to infiltrate a Cuban military base in order to recover Paz and Chico.

PlayStation and Xbox consoles both benefit from exclusive content – Sony fans get the Déjà Vu mission, which sees them reliving the original Metal Gear Solid in Ground Zeroes’ setting, complete with pixelated PlayStation One-era Snake. Xbox gamers can play the Jamais Vu mission, which sees Metal Gear Rising’s Raiden taking down body snatchers.

Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear series started life in 1987. The game was revolutionary as it focused on stealth and not straight out combat like many games at the time.

The series made the leap to the PlayStation with 1998’s Metal Gear Solid. This game’s cinematic storytelling was highly influential.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty launched on the PS2 in 2001 and was a showcase of what the console was capable of.

The series has also inspired spin-offs, including the hack-and-slash Metal Gear Rising.

Metal Gear Solid is one of the most recognisable and respected video game series of all time, and Ground Zeroes serves not only to reinforce that, but to grow its reputation for innovation and immersion even further.

Ground Zeroes marks a new beginning for the Metal?Gear series. Using the powerful Fox Engine, this title offers a real-world environment, wherein the player is charged with the rescue of characters who are integral to the forthcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
