Players can once again step behind the lens of a sniper scope in war-torn Berlin with Sniper Elite V2.
This shooter is an enhanced reboot of developer Rebellion’s 2005 title Sniper Elite, which was ported to Wii in 2010.
Set during the Battle of Berlin in 1945, the game drops players right in the heart of conflict between the Germans and the Russians in a mission concerning the mysterious German V-2 rocket programme.
Just as in the 2005 release, gamers will once again step into the role of undercover American OSS agent Karl Fairburne. They must navigate through battlegrounds to reach ideal sniping spots that provide a clear target and are simple to slink away from unnoticed.
Players will learn the art of sniping as they account for how much a bullet will drop over distances, breathing rates and even the smallest of changes to the wind. They can also use thunder to mask the sound of shots, pulling off the perfect shot.
“Sniper Elite V2 is a key title for 505 this year and with the free bonus DLC mission to assassinate the Fuhrer, the retail expectation is great,” says 505’s product manager Lewis Herbert.
“G4TV called it the ‘greatest pre-order bonus ever’. With hugely positive demo download stats and consumer reaction, it is hard not to be excited about the game.”
For the sharpest of shooters, great shots will be rewarded with the X-ray Kill Cam, a feature which slows down time and allows players to see the full effects of their precise firing.
Revealing the enemies skeleton and entrails, the Kill Cam gives gamers the chance to see their bullets shatter spines, pierce lungs, crack skulls and burst livers.
A multiplayer co-op campaign mode is available, as well as a range of competitive modes, such as Kill Tally, Overwatch and Bombing Run.
Sniper games as a sub-genre are backing out of their niche. Thanks to its authentic setting, tense action and comprehensive gameplay, Sniper Elite V2 could be the title to put the theme back on the frontlines.
Consumers who pre-order the game will receive a bonus single player mission: Assassinate the Fuhrer. Yes, players have the chance to kill Hitler while his personal train is stopped at a station. The mission also includes two new weapons – the SVT-40 battle rifle and the Karabiner 98 Kurtz service rifle.
Since its arrival in 2005 on PS2, PC, Xbox and later on the Wii, the original Sniper Elite went on to sell close to 1m copies worldwide. It proved itself popular with critics as well as consumers, with its PC and PS2 releases achieving Metacritic scores of 76.
505 showed off Sniper Elite V2 at The Gadget Show Live earlier this month. Online and print marketing campaigns are underway and will continue post-release. These consist of ads on IGN, GameSpot, Eurogamer, CVG, Xbox Live and PSN. ‘Kill-cams’ from the demo are also being shared on YouTube and Twitter.
