Star Trek: Trade Spotlight

This trade spotlight looks at Star Trek: The Video Game, a title that bridges the gap between the 2009 JJ Abrams film and the upcoming sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness.

We detail the in-game features, in-store and online offers and the marketing plan for the game. 

Namco Bandai UK marketing and PR director Lee Kirton also tells MCV why the firm has high hopes for the game.

Star Trek: The Video Game is released on April 26th.

 

 

 

 

  • This Star?Trek title takes place straight after the 2009 film from JJ Abrams and includes the vocal talent from the complete cast of the recent reboot.
  • Consumers can play as either one of the Final Frontier’s very own odd couple, Kirk and Spock, in an adventure that pits the duo against the classic Star Trek villain, the Gorn.
  • The gameplay is a true co-op experience, allowing players to drop in and out of the action, with the pairing having to rely on each other to survive.
  • Depending on the character, gamers will have to utilise skills exclusive to Kirk and Spock. For example, if Kirk finds himself injured, he will have to fend off enemies whilst Spock gives medical attention in the form of a mini-game.
  • The game also includes music from Star Trek composer Michael Giacchino and a 100-piece orchestra, as well as a script from Star Trek co-writer Roberto Orci, Fringe writer Alex Kurtzman and Bafta-winning video game writer Marianne Krawczyk.
  • Star Trek: The Video Game also presents fans of the series and film with new areas of the Enterprise, as well as previously unexplored corners of the galaxy including jungles and remote space stations.

 

 

  • Consumers that pre-order the game can get access to the Elite Officer Pack. This bundle includes the stealth pack, with uniforms and a stealth sniper rifle and the brawler pack with Kirk’s leather jacket costume and Spock’s Vulcan Science Academy costume.
  • Also included is the Kelvin pack, the Academy Pack and the Kobayashi Maru pack, each containing themed uniforms.
  • An exclusive to GAME will see customers that pre-order the game receive a free ticket to see Star Trek Into Darkness at any Cineworld cinema in the country.

 

  • Namco Bandai and Paramount have joined with IGN to create a Star Trek: The Video Game hub, which is active now.
  • The hub features information on the game, trailers, links to retailers and a browser game that will give players the chance to win a 3DTV, a PS3 or Xbox 360, a copy of the Star Trek game, and the 2009 movie on Blu-ray or DVD. Runners up and spot prizes include copies of the game.

The Star Trek licence is very popular and the anticipation for the new movie is epic. We have a strong video game experience and we have been working towards not associating it with traditional ‘movie based games’.

The investment in the development has been significant, and with all the talent and ingredients from the franchise, it should have great sales. Star Trek Into Darkness also comes into cinemas two weeks later and this should keep the sales of the title consistent unlike a traditional game release.

We have high hopes for this title. Getting the game in front of consumers, retailers and media has been important to us, as has working with the mainstream, sci- fi and movie press.

The game is an authentic experience which makes you believe you’re watching a follow up to the 2009 movie, so we’ve wanted people to see how much care and attention has gone into the game with the cast, voice over, script, music and graphics engine.

 

  • Namco Bandai has focused heavily on events in promoting Star Trek, showing the game off at E3 2011, E3 2012, Gamescom, Destination Star Trek London (Excel), MCM Expo and a Star Trek: The Video Game event at the Science Museum in London.
  • Star Trek has appeared on the cover of PSM3, Xbox World and 360 Gamer and has been the focus of features and interviews with Paramount in publications including Wired, Total Film, SFX, Sci Fi Now and Empire.
  • A cross promotion with Paramount Pictures will see the game advertised in a special edition of the 2009 movie and a London-focused outdoor campaign will see Star Trek grace London buses and appear throughout the Underground.
  • The firm also created a promotional video for Yahoo!?Movies, which sees William Shatner and one of The Gorn playing the game. Unfortunately, a disagreement soon leads them to recreate a fight between the two last seen in a famous episode from the TV show.

 

 

IN 2009, JJ Abrams brought Star Trek back in a new big screen reboot.

The film was an origins story focusing on the young Enterprise crew. The game is set after the first film and arrives two weeks before the big screen sequel Star Trek Into Darkness.
