You could argue that the Nintendo 3DS hasn’t yet received its one true killer app. Until now.
Yes it has seen classic games get 3D makeovers – like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64 – but consumers have had to wait for a triple-A adventure to sink their teeth into.
Super Mario 3D Land ticks all the boxes. It’s an all-new platformer featuring gaming’s most iconic hero lovingly crafted especially for the 3DS console.
Gameplay is an enjoyable blend of the recent Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros hits, with players able to explore 3D worlds as well as traditional side-scrolling 2D-style levels.
“Super Mario 3D Land reinvents everything fans love about Mario gaming with the first platforming environment in true 3D, presenting a 3D Mario game that plays like a 2D Mario game,” says Nintendo’s junior product manager Roger Langford.
The 3DS gives players a new sense of depth as they leap from platform to platform. Gamers can also play using the 3DS’ built-in gyro sensor. On top of this, Super Mario 3D?Land will feature StreetPass functionality.
Mario’s new tail
3D?Land brings back the popular Tanooki racoon suit made famous in Nintendo’s classic Super Mario Bros 3. Players can use the suit’s tail to attack and float safely.
There’s also new moves for Mario, such as a rolling somersault attack and a running dash. Plus, he can use propeller blocks to float in the air for a while.
All in all, Super Mario 3D Land offers not only a must-buy proposition for 3DS owners, but a strong incentive for those who don’t own one. Expect it to be a true system-seller this Christmas.
Nintendo is planning a TV, online and outdoor marketing campaign to promote Super Mario 3D?Land.
Nintendo’s junior product manager Roger Langford tells MCV:?"Pre-launch we will be focusing on pre-orders with an online campaign running across gaming sites. As we move closer to launch, we will also have online activity across all major kids sites, showing all the new elements that Super Mario 3D Land has to offer.
"For release we will have a large presence on TV with activity across all channels including a separate dedicated kids TV campaign.
"All of this activity will ensure that fans of Mario will be aware of his latest adventure, and with Mario Kart 7 also on the horizon, it's an exciting time for Nintendo 3DS."
Mario needs no introduction. But to give you an idea of how popular the portly plumber is, his games have sold over 262m copies worldwide. He has appeared in more than 200 titles.
Super Mario’s Lands
3D Land is the fourth game to feature the Super Mario Land name, following three classic Game Boy titles. The original Super Mario Land is available to download on the 3DS eShop.
Super Mario 3D?Land has been developed by Nintendo EAD. It also produced Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, two Wii titles that each have a Metacritic score of 97.
