Fans of the critically acclaimed 1994 title UFO: Enemy Unknown rejoice, the game is returning is the form of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a title that retains the strategy roots of the original.
When aliens decide to invade the planet, players take up the role as a commander of XCOM, an elite global organisation established to ensure that if they don’t come in peace, they’ll leave in pieces.
Gamers will have to build bases, communicate with other governments and plan battles to make maintain the survival of the human race, a task made all the more tense thanks to the fact that soldiers can now die permanently.
In the heat of battle, players will have control of a squad consisting of up to six soldiers with classes ranging from heavy weapons specialists to snipers capable of shooting the hair off a gnat’s arse.
In a first for the series, Enemy Unknown will bring a one-on-one deathmatch option to the game’s multiplayer modes, and players will also be able create squads of humans, aliens or a mix of the two to take onto the battlefield.
The game has already pocketed a few ‘Best of E3’ awards and will hopefully walk the line between satisfying fans of the original and those coming to the XCOM reboot afresh.
Fans of the franchise can enjoy a blast from the past in the Elite Soldier pre-order bonus pack. This extra included a classic XCOM solider complete with khaki jumpsuit and flat-top hairstyle as well as soldier deco packs and complete colour customisation.
