Phantom console scrapped

The troubled Phantom Games Service has now admitted that its hardware will never hit retail.

After endlessly prolonging one of the biggest farces in the games industry, confirmation recently appeared on the Phantom website stating that the scheme is now to take the form of a standard games-on-demand service.

The statement explained: “Delivered over broadband, the company intends to modify the Phantom Games Service software to run as client software on personal computers operating Windows XP and Windows XP Media Centre operating systems.”

Originally designed to be an under-the-TV Internet enabled games machine, after ditching its Infinium moniker the company had intended to release a lap-top keyboard and mouse peripheral, but even this has now dropped off the horizon.

Whether the current proposals will ever reach fruition is yet to be seen, but with many similar services already on the market, any hopes Phantom had of heralding a gameplay revolution are surely in tatters
