Ambitious Japanese publisher Square Enix has targeted major growth in Western territories – starting with a hunt to acquire a European developer.
In an exclusive interview in today's MCV, president and CEO John Yamamoto said that the publisher will be putting its money behind its assertion that Europe could become a bigger market than Japan by publishing and developing more ‘Western’ games going forward.
“I am very interested in European development because there are a lot of very good independent studios,” said Yamamoto. “We have started having meetings with people right now, and we will keep going. Titles I’m looking at are for Europe and also the US. We are not looking to hire staff one by one, so maybe studios that have good experience would be easier to work with.”
And while the publisher continues to thrash out further deals, the Yamamoto outlined plans to bring many more of Square’s titles to these shores.
“We have many more titles that we have never released in Europe, and every producer in Square Enix is keen to release all of these titles into the European market,” he told MCV. “We have been making titles exclusively for one format for a long time but now we have titles for all formats.
“Early next year we have Final Fantasy XII,” he added. “It is a big title for us and 2007 will see more Square titles released in Europe than ever before. We’ll release over a dozen titles next year.”
