Wii breaks 50,000 barrier on day one

Nintendo has managed to shift 50,000 units on Wii launch day  – and UK boss David Yarnton has insisted that the firm will do everything it can to meet the huge demand for the console.

Having broken what is likely to be the first of many milestones in the console’s lifespan, Nintendo UK boss Yarnton said: “We are delighted with the amazing response to Wii and that people of all ages and gaming experience are embracing the way that we are turning the industry on its head.”

“With so many units sold it is great to see that people will be enjoying Wii with their families this Christmas. We are doing everything we can do to meet demand throughout Christmas and the New Year period.”

After the official launch of the console at HMV last night, reports suggest that Wii stock was available at retail this morning for those willing to queue, and online store Amazon had an extra batch of hardware on hand this afternoon.

Several retailers have told MCV today that while all the day one stock has gone, further deliveries will come in over the next two weeks and some sporadic bursts of extra hardware should be available to consumers as Christmas draws ever nearer. Extra Wii-mote controllers have also turned out to be rather scarce.

Already, eBay.co.uk has seen the new Nintendo console selling for over £350, as consumers snap up the hardware seemingly at any costs to ensure their Christmas will be spent waving their hands around like maniacs.
