Lowenstein to leave ESA?

E3 organiser the ESA could be on the hunt for a new figurehead in the next few weeks, as rumours on the web suggest that Doug Lowenstein is to step down.

Major US consumer site GameStop and blog Kotaku believe that Lowenstein will leave the ESA to join ‘non-game-related trade group.’ It is also understood that Lowenstein will remain in charge until February.

The potential move comes following the drastic downsizing of trade show E3, which will now welcome around 5,000 games industry executives rather than the 60,000 that attended earlier this year. It will now take place within far more modest surroundings in Santa Monica in July, as the cost concerns that forced the show to change come into effect.

It would be another high profile departure from the ESA as former ESA VP and E3 organiser Mary Dolaher left last month to join IDG, where she is responsible for the as-yet unnamed new consumer show to take place in E3’s former home the LA Convention Centre in November. Nevertheless, Dolaher will be heading up the organisation of the ‘new’ E3 Media and Business Summit.

More news on Lowenstein’s future is expected later this week.
