Live Arcade heading to handheld?

The Zune music player will boast games functionality within 18 months, as Microsoft looks to take on Apple in the MP3 sector plus Nintendo and Sony in the games arena.

According to Bloomberg, Microsoft VP Peter Moore has confirmed the move, revealing that the Zune’s large screen will offer a better way to play handheld games.

Zune was launched in November in the US, but has so far failed to break Apple’s stranglehold on the MP3 player market. However, analysts have suggested that expanding the functionality of the handheld to include gaming could provide a huge boost to the system. Microsoft, of course, already boasts a strong catalogue of casual gaming titles that would suit the handheld, thanks to Live Arcade.
