ELSPA ducks out of Woolworths row

Other sectors are already uniting in the face of Woolworths’ shock payment request to suppliers earlier this week, but the UK’s games trade body ELSPA has decided not to go to war with the leading retailer.

Earlier this week, Woolies sent a controversial mail to suppliers requesting a contribution to cover existing investments, as well as altering its payment terms significantly.

In response to the move, UK toy trade body the British Toy and Hobby Association hit back by stating: “It appears that, without prior consultation, suppliers are to be taxed at around five per cent of their turnover to finance investment by Woolworths. The Association understands that members affected are giving a robust response in return and requesting the courtesy of a negotiated agreement.”

However, UK games trade body ELSPA has refused to join the BTHA in confronting the retailer, with a spokesperson telling MCV: “We understand that a letter has been sent to ELSPA members by Woolworths. We understand that it is of a non-specific nature and is a matter for each individual supplier.”
