Sony’s online store ditches 20GB PS3

Rumours that low-spec PS3 model is to be discontinued gather pace

With the 20GB PS3 not making it to Europe and continuing to be outsold by the 60GB model in both North America and Japan, speculation that the console is set to be discontinued is gathering pace following Sony’s decision to withdraw the model from its online store.

Next Generation reports that the removal of the $499 20GB model from the SonyStyle website follows hot on the heels of leading US retailer Best Buy’s decision to drop the unit last month following poor sales.

It also recently emerged that Sony has filed details of an 80GB PS3 model with the US Federal Communications Commission, though the company has subsequently denied the existence of this machine.

Sony has consistently refuted any suggestion that the 20GB model is to be discontinued.
