Special effects studio Digital Domain to develop ‘four to five’ games by 2009
Leading Hollywood director Michael Bay, co-chairman of special effects studio Digital Domain, has expressed his intention to get several top US movie directors involved in the video games industry, and also hinted at possible development acquisitions.
The LA Times reports that Bay aims to develop four to five games in the next two years. His intention is to allow Hollywood directors direct access to the game making process, rather than adopting the usual approach of licensing out the franchises to third party studios.
Digital Domain has plans to open its own games unit and possibly acquire “one or more” games firms this year.
The company’s founders include James Cameron (Terminator 2, Titanic), and it enjoys close working relations with the likes of David Fincher (Fight Club, Alien 3) and Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious), as well as Bay himself, who is directing the upcoming movie adaptation of Transformers.
As well as handling the special effects for movies like Titanic and The Day After Tomorrow, Digital Domain was also responsible for Microsoft’s highly successful Gears of War TV commercial that featured Donnie Darko’s Mad World track.
