Problem down to ‘improper use’, says Microsoft

Microsoft has responded to mounting accusations that Xbox 360 is damaging consumers’ discs – maintaining that there is “no systematic issue” with the console.

Calls for a review into problems with damaged discs came to a head this week, when EC for Consumers Meglena Kuneva confirmed that she had written to Microsoft requesting information on its plans to resolve the issues.

In a statement, Microsoft told MCV that it has responded to Kuneva – and that faulty discs are likely to have been caused by ‘improper use’ of the console.

It said: “There has been correspondence between Commissioner Kuneva’s cabinet and Microsoft’s Belgian offices.

“We are working in an open dialogue to help explain our position and all the efforts we are taking across the EU to address any concerns that our consumers may have.

“If used properly, Xbox 360 consoles do not damage discs... there is no single root cause or systemic issue with any of the Xbox 360 consoles.”

I really don't think scratched disks are the problem - that's down to people moving the machine from horizontal to vertical whilst it's reading a disc. The problem MCV should be talking about is the hardware failure rate - nearly everyone I know has had to send their machine back to Microsoft. Some of them many times.

“360 Red Ring article in MCV”

King Penguin, in today's MCV magazine there is a box at the side of the scratched discs story on the 'Red Ring Of Death'. MS says that they are certain that the issue is 'confined to a minority of 360 owners'.

Yeah, and Stan Collymoore says he's still good enough to play for England. Don't get me wrong - electrical stuff goes wrong. PS2s are notorious for it, older models anyway. But I've never known of anything that breaks as much as 360. At first I thought it was internet speculation and minority forum members, but everyone I know has suffered to some extent. Shame too, as it's such a great machine.

Even Chris Moyles was going on about it on Radio One this morning - apparently he's already on his second machine.

..and I thought I was the only one who had to use their XBOX upside down just to get to the end of GEARS. At least I know I'm normal. Did I say that? Hello..! Was that an echo..? Hello..!

there is a disc scratching issue. how many people go out of their way to move their console while it's running anyway??

i certainly haven't and a number of my games have been chewed to the point of being useless. i've got a ps3,ps3,laptop,a few pcs over the years, sterio system etc. yet its only my xbox 360 that scratches my discs. user error? BS.

fact is microsoft don't really give a shit.. hope they're made to pay for every brand new $60 disc destroyed by that piece of junk.

I just bought a system last Friday. I can attest to the disc scratching issue without a doubt. I was aware they had issues but figured it was just morons moving the system around while a disc was spinning (even though the laser should be padded). However, I chewed through two discs while the system was being run vertically. Luckily, the shop I bought the system from replaced the discs, but I can certainly see how this is going to be an issue. I haven't had a recurance of the problem since I began running the system horizontally.

I personally have had 2 disks wrecked by my 360. however it only occurs when the console is bumped or knocked over when it is reading the disk. My issue was Guitar hero 2 and Rock band. whilst drinking too much beer = scratched disk. trust me the math adds up.

i am on my fourth. I would be playing it right now but they forgot to send me the power cord back. They are kind enough to tell me that it will onl be a eight day wait as oppose to the 29 day wait for the console. You can't blame them; you can't fix what you can't find. They lost the console as soon as they checked it in. And before anyone says well they specifically tell you not to send in the power cord, just wait until you send it in the third time.

We've just been playing GTA in the last couple of days. The xbox sits on a shelf under the tv and it is never moved. Our disc is now scratched to a point where it wont read.
What can I do?

Can i get a new copy of the game?
