Nintendo powers ahead in US and Japan

DS and Wii strengthen market control on both sides of the globe

The latest figures from both the US and Japan paint a progressively pleasing picture for Nintendo, with the Japanese platform holder continuing to outperform its rivals in both markets.

NPD’s latest North American sales figures for May show total Wii sales of 338,000 for the month – more than the combined total of Xbox 360 and PS3, which sold 155,000 and 82,000 respectively. The DS proved equally as dominant with sales of 423,000, nearly double PSP’s 221,000.

The latest weekly sales figures from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain reveal an even more dominant scenario for Nintendo in the Far East. For the week ending June 10th, Wii and DS between them accounted for 79 per cent of all hardware sales, with Wii shifting 64,529 units and DS 117,193.

In contrast, PS3 sold 8,776, PSP 24,711 and Xbox 360 2,553.
