Microsoft rolls up Katamari rights

Rumours suggest that, as well as Beautiful Katamari agreement, Microsoft has a number of Xbox 360 exclusivity deals in the works

Following on going speculation that has seen PS3 and Wii versions first confirmed and then questioned, Newsweek’s N'Gai Croal reports that Xbox 360 exclusivity for Namco’s upcoming Beautiful Katamari could now be back on the cards.

Namco Bandai’s quirky Katamari series won a loyal following upon its debut in Japan in 2004, which lead to EA picking up the European publishing rights to the sequel, We Love Katamari and PSP outing Me and My Katamari.

With development costs continuing to grow, some had suggested that the idea of platform exclusivity was no longer viable. But Microsoft seems to still believe it – earlier today MCV reported on its deal with Rockstar for exclusive GTA IV episodic content.

And a supposedly leaked document containing details of Microsoft’s E3 announcements suggests that further exclusive deals for the likes of Star Wars Battlefront 3 and Ninja Gaiden 2 could also be announced soon.

At the same time, traditional PlayStation mainstays such as Devil May Cry 4 and, if rumours are to be believed, Metal Gear Solid, will now also be released on Microsoft’s console.

Any sort of new Katamari outing is welcome. The series has been one of the best things to happen to gaming in the last decade. Does anyone know if Takahashi is hands on with this or is he staying true to his word and stepping away from the series?
