Virgin Play signs Real Madrid

Distributor demonstrates video games publishing intentions by revealing new football licence deal with Spanish champions

Spanish distributor Virgin Play has made a bold first move into the publishing sector by securing the licence to publish games based on the Real Madrid brand.

After enjoying plenty of success its home country, the company last year announced intentions to extend its Spanish-based publishing operations into other global territories.

With this new five year Real Madrid agreement in the bag, Virgin Play plans to release Real Madrid: The Official Videogame on Xbox 360, PS3, PSP, Wii, DS and PC, with the first versions appearing in 2008.

MCV understands that the licence allows Virgin Play to use the brand in a variety of ways – including taking it online – and that it is currently reviewing its distribution options.

A formal announcement about the game itself, as well as details concerning its developer, is due later this summer and will come directly from Real Madrid Football Club.
