New Wii Channel to boast original indie games content as Nintendo makes even greater strides into casual games market

MCV sister site Develop reports that Nintendo has confirmed reports that it will introduce a new game creation service that will let developers sell new games through the Nintendo Wii online shop called WiiWare.

The new downloads offer is targeted at developers of all sizes and was unveiled at the Nintendo Developer Conference held in the US earlier this week.

According to Nintendo 'WiiWare paves the way for smaller, more creative games to make their way to the public at lower prices, without any inventory risk to developers' - first content on the WiiWare service will arrive early next year.

"Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit," commented Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime in the official announcement.

"WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners."

Nintendo is keen to make it clear that the service has a wide remit for a variety of games content that uses the Wii Remote controller and Nunchuck. Recently, the company has bolstered the Nintendo middleware program with signings such as Fonix and Vicious Cycle.

The official statement about the service stated: "The reduced barriers to development provide developers the freedom to create and an inexpensive, clearly defined path to reach consumers who will ultimately determine which game will become the Next Big Thing."

This is fantastic. Wii's Virtual Console retro offering is already pretty strong - imagine what it will be like when it's complemented by some Wii Remote-specific indie titles! Quality.
