Tretton lashes out against exclusivity deals

SCEA boss says his company won’t “bribe” publishers for third party exclusivity on PS3

In a direct attack against both of his major competitors, Sony America boss Jack Tretton has stated that his company has a “different approach” to rival platform holders, with particular emphasis directed toward the topic of platform exclusivity.

Speaking to Future’s consumer mag PSM, Tretton stated: "Microsoft is too dependent upon the third-party community, and Nintendo is too dependent upon first-party. We like to feel that we got a pretty good mix.

"We have a very different approach to exclusives than some of our competitors.

"We don't buy exclusivity. We don't fund development. We don't, for lack of a better term, bribe somebody to only do a game on our platform.

"We earn it by saying you can build a better game on our platform. If you focus your development on our platform, you will ultimately be more successful.

A better word is "patnership" Jack.

Whether or not a better game can be made on the PS3 is almost irrelevant
. What developer is going to want to focus on the PS3 only if the platform sales aren't there to ensure they will maximise their sales?
Any exclusivity deal will always take into account the opportunity cost of not developing on the other systems, so saying "develop on the PS3 because its better, but we are not going to give you anything extra towards it" is not going to convince too many 3rd parties.

look at mgs4. only a drunken fool would make that a ps3 exclusive, given the 360 has 10x more units out the door than the ps3.

so why is it?

sony bribed konami. if i remember correctly from the trailer

'mgs4 on the ps3, it'll be worth the wait'

"What developer is going to want to focus on the PS3 only if the platform sales aren't there to ensure they will maximise their sales?"

Why is it that everyone who hates the PS3 uses this very stupid and almost ignorant logic? If you didn't realize it, EXCLUSIVES SELL SYSTEMS!!!! Who would have bought the original Xbox if Halo wasn't exclusive? Because at that time, PS2 was stomping the Xbox into the ground. Fable also....same thing. Do you realize how many people bought PS2 JUST FOR FINAL FANTASY X. and then a couple years later, people bought the PS2 JUST FOR MGS2. If you make games exclusive for the PS3, good AAA games, that will sell PS3s because you won't be able to play those games on any other system. And by those means will the developers "maximize their sales".

"so why is it? sony bribed konami."

If you kept up with E3 this year, or just have kept up with Hideo Kojima since 2005, you would realize that MGS4 is staying PS3 exclusive because Kojima believes that the 360 just won't be able to handle the game, and that the PS3 is the system it should be on.
