PS3 boosts Blu-Ray sales by 1000 per cent

Sales of Sony’s hi-def movies pass the 180,000 mark in Europe

With Sony’s high definition Blu-Ray format seemingly pulling away from Toshiba’s rival HD-DVD standard in the current hi-def war, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that European Blu-Ray sales have enjoyed a sharp rise since the arrival of PS3.

Tech Digest reports that over 180,000 Blu-Ray Sony movies have now been sold in Europe, with sales climbing by over 1000 per cent since Sony’s PlayStation 3 hit the market in March

"The launch of the PS3 had a tremendous impact on Blu-Ray software sales across the board," Sony Pictures’ executive VP Matt Brown stated. "Recent sales figures are a clear indication that the PS3 is seen as an entertainment device."

Well, with over about a third of Xbox 360 consoles being sent back for repairs (mine included) I beg to differ.

PS3 may look to have had a slow launch but the numbers tell an interesting story, if you compare totals sold over the first 3 months you will see that the PS3 is performing well when stacked up with the 360 for the same time.

My understanding is that PS3 has sold through over 1.2 million since end March in their PAL territories this year at a very high price and that all publishers are aware that X Box 360 is dead in Japan and continental Europe. I think SONY have picked off X Box 360 and will now soon have Wii in their sights. The boom in Blu Ray is just a bonus, but a welcome one for SONY.

Yeah but compare the Wii to the PS3 and theres another diffirent story, Wii is totaly owning the PS3. Lets not forget that the PS3 is a games console and blu ray player and it cant even keep up with the Wii.

Oh and i forgot to say.. they might aswell take off all the free blu rays they have given away with PS3's and Blu ray players from that figure and there would most likely be none sold

Sony is on the nose - the brand is associated with lies, and advertising that has been labled racist, sexist, anti-Christian, and promoting pedophilia, and animal cruelty. Their quality is in flames, & their technologies are seen as dead end formats offering low performance & high cost compared to its peers.
This is a dying company that few wish to be seen associated with.

You do realize that Sony are not the only company ever to tell lies or have mishaps with their advertising? Microsoft have had more lawsuits filed against them then I care to type.

As with 'quality in flames' most Sony products are of good quality, such as Bravia TV's or the PlayStation 3 unlike the Microsofts mishaps with their OS's and the Xbox360 failure rates.

For most people the PS3 is just a cheaper Blu-Ray player. I know people who bought the system strickly for movies. For that reason alone adding the Blu-Ray player was marketing genius. The Wii has also found it's gimic. With no where near the power of Xbox or PS3 it managed to recapture the fun of a home console. The market has always supported 2 and 3 systems at a time. I don't think any one system will "win" and destroy the others. The more high tech the systems get the more prone to failure and overheating they will become.

wii is owning ps3 beacuse wii is very cheap. more people buy skodas than ferraris, that doesent mean that skodas are better.

as for 360, the xbox was simply a copy of the ps2, the 360 is a copy of the ps2 with even better graphics. at least the wii is an origional idea.
