E3 2007: Sony rolls out new Euro PS3 bundle

No price cut in Europe, but high value pack launched

SCEE earlier this morning announced the launch of a new value ‘Start Pack’, comprising a PS3, two first party games and two Sixaxis controllers.

Available with immediate effect, priced at Euro 599 (£425), the two titles available in the pack will vary from country to country, but are likely to mainly comprise Resistance: Fall Of Man and Motorstorm.

SCEE has chosen not to adopt a similar strategy to the US, which has cut the price of the 60GB version by $100, at the same time introducing an 80GB model. The saving offered by the Starter Pack, however, equates to around £115.

In the UK, retailers will be able to offer a ‘pick and mix’ of first party titles, including Formula One, Genji and Ridge Racer 7, as well as Resistance and Motorstorm.

“With sell-through of over 1.2 million units in the SCEE territories to date, PlayStation 3 has proved to be an instant and huge success,” said SCEE president David Reeves.

“The exceptional value of the new Starter Pack will bring the excitement of PlayStation to gaming to a much wider audience. Add to this a stellar line-up of software titles for the second half of the year and we are confident that this amazing value Starter Pack will encourage many more keen gamers to join the PlayStation 3 community.”

While the Starter Pack does offer genuine value, the lack of a solus console will no doubt make customers feel they are having launch titles forced upon them when really new customers will be buying PS3's now for the Q4 titles.

Expect a glut of traded in copies of Motorstorm and Resistance are about to hit big time as customers give themselves the price drop Sony should have.
