Marketing boss Peter Dille suggests 360 ‘doesn’t even work’
SCEA’s VP of marketing Peter Dille has predicted that HD-DVD will be obsolete “in a matter of months”, and attacked the build of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 – following an admission by the Seattle firm that it had seen an ‘unacceptable’ number of faulty machines.
Dille also condemned his rival’s history in the console market and questioned the long-term potential of the Xbox 360.
Speaking to Gamasutra at the E3 expo, Dille said:
"I don't want to be argumentative, but I take issue with Microsoft either having a long tail, or being profitable, because they've never done either. They've never made a dime in this business.
"With the Xbox 360 you've got an inconsistent design, some have a hard drive, some don't, and none of them have Blu-Ray, and the HD-DVD will be out of business in a matter of months. Is this a ten year product?"
"And by the way it doesn't even work. Do they want to be selling it for ten years and refurbishing them all for ten more years? I don't think that's a ten year product. You could disagree with me, or they could disagree with me, but I'd put that up against the PS3 any day."

The one thing that makes me worry about Sony's '10 year console' strategy is that market pressures are always going to require you to bring out a new one every 5... the only way you could dictate the market is if you were the only console in it... and it would be a sad day if Sony was the only console... I'd rather see a Microsoft monopoly than a bloated and arrogant Sony one...
how can something really be future proof ???? technology changes so fast, that to say something is future proof for 10 years is ridiculous. This is ignoring the high likelihood of a totally new media format coming out, as well as changes and advances in internet communication etc that have not even been thought about yet that may require a whole new rethink to console architecture.
While it is good for any compnay to have a long term plan, it is also good to be able to react to the short term - I agree the Xbox 360 may not be around for 10 years - but is this a bad thing ?
Do we really want consoles to be around for 10 years - personally, I want the latest technology to drive my games, and dont think I will be getting this from any of the current consoles in 10 years time. Hopefully, there will be a new console before then that uses the most upto date technology of the future, whatever that may be.
Another weak attempt at trying to justify the enormous (and now offensive in Europe) PS3 price. And Sony calling MS's hardware? Need we remember the plague of playstation disk drive problems?
In 7ish year the next xbox will be out and sony will still be raving about how 360's dont work and how the ps3 is still future proof for 3 more years, then if sony last the next machine will be delayed at least another year.
Oh and for the record mircosoft have surely fixed the 360 problem by now because a company wont get to where they are by giving cover for items that dont work
I spent one thousand dollars for my Blu-ray player and not only does it suck but since the formats specs are not yet completed it will need to be replaced in the near future in order to be fully functional. I've since purchased an HD DVD player at more then half this price and get more features and better quality.

Given the failure rate on the original PS2 I'm surprised Peter Dille has got the cheek to stand up and be quoted on that issue alone.
Will HD-DVD be obsolete in a matter on months, very unlikely I would think, Blu-Ray Specs are still not finished yet so to say HD-DVD is over before BD has even started for real is again not really telling the full story IMHO.
Given the current share of the total video market on both of the competing HD formats hasn’t even got to 2% worldwide I think we are a long way from seeing a winner/loser, the war is not over until the last shot is fired and that at least a few years off.
Sony can be very proud of the PS3, it’s a good machine, great build quality, looks great via HDMI, just needs some good games and very….very quick unless it wants the PS3 to become a low priced Blu-Ray player.
Metal Gear Solid or Gran Turisimo maybe not shipping until 2008, that’s a long wait for something that is platform exclusive, most gamers will buy the multi platform titles version that is:
1) Cheapest
2) Has good online ability
3) Offers something exclusive
Fingers crossed Sony can take these factors on board and get some good games on the market, until then I’ll have the 360 version every time.

What is wrong with Sony? The PS3 is on very shaky ground. How many exclusive titles (including, possibly metal gear solid) have been lost? The standard Sony answer is to call it over for the competition and to make no distinction made between shipped and sold to consumers.
Xbox 360 has a black eye with the ring of death fiasco, however the 3 years warranty is going to help reassure customers, new buyers and current owners. I like that Xbox is making improvements like 65nm Falcon chips, but a 10 year game system is a fantastic goal. One I wouldn’t want, I like the improvements to systems that we only get in a new system.
In a recent article Van Baker, an analyst for Gartner said "PlayStation needs a kick-ass game title," Baker noted. "And I don't see one on the horizon. I see some good titles in the pipeline, but none that make you say, 'Wow! That's amazing!'"
Despite questions as to the cause of the hardware failures, the Xbox 360 has a solid reputation as a great gaming machine. "I don't think anybody out there sees the PlayStation 3 as a better machine -- unless they are big Blu-ray movie fans,"
The Blu-ray and HD “war” is pathetic, the total sales of both
High Def formats put together is embarrassing. But here again Sony is trying to buffalo its way to victory. The experts in the home theater market are not prediction one format wining over the other, a 1.7 to 1 sales split maybe. Probably why Sony is trying so hard now to close the door on competition. I don’t see it that way after all the console wars don’t leave us with only one system and UMD ,a niche market if there ever was one, is still around.
The 80GB PS3 to be the only option once the 60GB consoles are all sold out
Although the $100 price drop on the 60GB PlayStation 3 appears from most angles to be a tactic from Sony Computer Entertainment America to help jumpstart sales of its new console, comments from the company’s European arm seem to paint the price reduction as a method of clearing out old stock. http://www.dailytech.com/No+More+60GB+PS3+Consoles+in+US+Once+Sold+Out+Says+SCEE+Boss/article8039.htmhttp://www.dailytech.com/No+More+60GB+PS3+Consoles+in+US+Once+Sold+Out+Says+SCEE+Boss/article8039.htm
So with HD DVD being dead in a few months how will this impact the 360 in any way?
Games for 360 are all on DVD and as far as I can tell theres not alot of difference between them and their PS3 counterparts.
Arguably there is alot more space on BRD to a dvd but until companies decide they'll fill that space then I remain to see the point of the argument.
On the flipside, I guess there is an argument on the film front that MS could have an obsolete format- That is, until they announce a BRD player addon which I would put money on being imminent if that happened.
Both Companies are having their problems- theres no denying the ring of death cases on 360 and MS have stepped up, admitted their faults and are trying to put things right- Kudos!
Sony, on the otherhand seem to oversee the fact their machine is too expensive and despite announcing price drops, they continue to sell units in Europe at extortionate prices- faulty units may alienate fans, but so does extortionate prices!
Start sorting out your own problems before criticising others!
So in conclusion.... Every one has got problems (Except maybe Nintendo).
This certainly brings out the fanboys in droves. At least it brightens up the wet and dull summer days :-)
When did microsoft state that the 360 is a ten year product? And at the rate the ps3 is selling it seems it maybe hard pressed to get 5 years. And his ranting about hd-dvd is null and void since erm well the 360 doesnt use them for games.
I personally don't know who is going to win the war but I do believe that downloading movies, TV Shows and music will out do Both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Besides it's cheaper.
What was this guy thinking? The PS3 is on seriously thin ice with sales compared to the competition. XBOX 360 is a solid system, and Sony could only dream about competeing with XBOX Live. As for HD DVD and BLU-RAY, that battle is far from over. HD DVD is cheaper, has more features, and BLU-RAY would be digging it's own grave right now if the PS3 hadn't flooded the market with players. And BLU-RAY can still barely sell more titles than HD DVD. I think this will get interesting. Sorry to burst your bubble Sony.
"I don't want to be argumentative, but I take issue with Microsoft either having a long tail, or being profitable, because they've never done either."
Funny because it's true. How can you argue with the guy when he says that?
