Rockstar’s Manhunt accused in interview with killer’s parents

The News Of The World has printed a two-page feature indicating that the murderer of 33-year old British nurse Cheryl Moss was influenced by video games.

The newspaper interviewed the parents of killer Stuart Harling, 19, who bludgeoned Moss to death with a hunting blade in Hornchurch, East London on April 6th last year.

Under the banner headline, ‘Sadistic games turned our baby-faced son into killer’, the NOTW reports:

‘Every night [Harling] would retreat into his darkened bedroom at home in Rainham, Essex, and enter a grisly virtual world that revelled in sadism, ritual blood-letting and death. Just like millions of other youngsters.

‘One of baby-face Harling’s favourite games was the notorious Manhunt, where players SLASH and SLICE their victims with meat CLEAVERS, cheese WIRE and chainsaws.’

Harling’s mother Lorraine is quoted as saying: “I knew he was playing the video games but we didn’t really know what went on in them; how brutal and graphic they were,” adding, “For a long time I didn’t even realise games had age limits on them.

Pinnacle - Football Director

We’d just buy him the game that all the other kids had.”

The caption to the lead image – a montage of photographs of Harling superimposed on images from Manhunt – reads:

‘MAKING OF A MONSTER: In the hushed darkness of his bedroom Harling secretly lapped up sick scenes in his Manhunt PlayStation game, immersing himself in the brutal characters – until one day fantasy and reality merged in his brain spawning a callous killer.’

Harling was convicted of Ms. Moss’ murder two weeks ago at the Old Bailey. According to the BBC, the trial revealed that Harling was ‘obsessed’ with pornography and serial killers.

Oh, so ignore the link with being obsessed by serial killers all together... nah, it couldn't possibly be that no could it! It must be the video games and porn...

It's a wonder why more men aren't killing each other

So the parents admit to buying the game and say they didnt realise what was in it or the age rating, ignorance is no excuse! I know lets buy our son some porn and horror films they might have fluffy teddy bears in them

How lovely...the killers mother is profiting from selling her heartfelt story of how she raised a psycho and didn't realise his obsession with porn and serial killers. Perhaps if she spent more time being a parent instead of reading the news of the world, she might have saved her son and his victim!!

This disgusting shirking of responsibility and parental virtue is reprehensible and not even news worthy. Perhaps if they weren't trying to single out Manhunt as the sole reason for his actions I'd have some sympathy for the parents, but coming forth and admitting their ineptitude, and then having the gall to sell their "story" leaves me with a very sour taste in my mouth and not the slightest notion of respect or condolence. I guess it's all too easy to blame others for their ignorance. Sadly thanks to the society we live in nowadays, games will always be a convenient scapegoat for bad parents.

With that said of course, I wouldn't expect any less from News Of The World, being the sensationalist rag it's always been. The day they can report a story without trying to tug the heartstrings of other people that should know better will probably be the day I join the choir invisible.

Do hope his parents have donated the "fee" for their story to a victims support charity of some sort...
BTW did he listen to "rap" music too? that's bound to have influenced him!

Next they will be blaming tom and jerry when someone gets hit in the face by a frying pan. Parents know what they are buying their kids. How many bought GTA games for their young teenagers, despite it having an 18 rating?

Talk about pass the buck. Lock the whole family up as they have been raised by yaks

‘Every night [Harling] would retreat into his darkened bedroom ... and enter a grisly virtual world that revelled in sadism, ritual blood-letting and death. Just like millions of other youngsters."

and yet only he became a psychopath, way to disprove you own thesis. What a bunch of brain surgeons.

But then why let the facts get in the way of lurid sensationalism.

I SAY RELEASE MANHUNT 2

"We’d just buy him the game that all the other kids had."

Okay, the guy was probably 18 at the time of the murder and therefore may have been of a legal age to buy the game, but still there's often doubt, and it's this sort of mentality that really needs fixing with the video games market. It baffles me that parents can on the one hand see games as murder simulators and nothing else, yet on the other carry this line of thinking, believing all games to be essentially harmless or not look into their content first. Goodness knows what'd happen if film was ever treated this way. Or has it been? I'm too young to remember days that maybe didn't have absolute limits on buying films outside my age range.

Just before the prohibition of the second manhunt, that gave room to a whole lot of talking about who should decide what is good to play or not and how do games really influence people, this article come along ... hum ...first these parents are too stupid, they sold themselfs cheaply and ended up putting there own credibility in check.. again, news runned by clueless people

It is really hard to put in words how these things get me angry,...come on people, you are just trying to poorly and unfairly convince yourselves and everybody around that you are right to have the right to decide on the rating of games... I am speechless on how ignorant those elderly running the governement and papers can be ...

to most posters, i agree the parents were stupid, even the guy that fixed there pc said to them keep any eye on your son, he`s into some really weird stuff, but they didn`t heed those words, and my sister paid the ultimate price for there failure, hope they spend the money on a nice meal then choke on it, and shame on the NOTW I WOULDN`T WIPE MY A** ON IT.

Oh being influenced by gaming is definetly real, why only last week after a 12 hour gaming session on Pac-Man, I left the house and tried to eat a Ghost!

But Tabliods always seem to pick on games with unfounded news, if the psychopathic brainwashing dosn't kill you, the epelepisy will!

"for a long time we didn't even realise games had age limits on them"

So.....does that say something about the kid or something about how the parents raised him?

who cares anymore it sucks that someone died but to blame anything other than the killer is stupid journalism sucks and the news of the world can't exactly be classed as journalism i know but they just want sensationalism hence pics of him merged with the game bizz words like "ritualistic" and even "playstation" a. manhunt had no religous conetations so no rituals and b. manhunt came out on xbox and pc too but everyones heard of playstation and there was no bloody chainsaw that you could use in manhunt theres one on the games case and one character has it but not the player

lets face it manhunt 2 is going to be released rockstar have spent to much on it to can it, it'll more than likely be out in time for christmas and all this negative press means one thing lots of people buying the game which is good news for any retailer so i'd suggest everyone send a thank you note to the news of the world come the new year when all your sales are up
