Outgoing Xbox boss questions importance of PS3’s US price drop and new 80GB model as he moves over to EA
Newly departed Xbox boss Peter Moore has told MCV that he believes Sony’s recent product tweaking in the US will be ineffective, and what’s really needed is a dramatic, decisive drop to $399.
Just days ahead of his dramatic move to head up EA Sports, Moore also went on to state that he respects Nintendo’s strategy and achievements above Sony’s in the next gen race to date, “simply because they deserve it”.
At his E3 press conference he said that since a three-horse race has developed, Xbox 360 has been in a good, even contest with Wii, with the PS3 being outsold by two to one.
Pushed on his rivals’ merits or otherwise, he commented to MCV: “The numbers bear it out. Nintendo deserves more respect. Maybe they’re still a bit weak on third parties – their record has never been great in that area – but they’re doing something about that and looking to address it.
“At his conference Reggie (Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America boss) said he was aware that some rivals had indicated that DS and Wii would turn out to be fads. Well I, for one, certainly don’t think that. Maybe he was referring to something that Sony has said. I’ve been a fan from day one.”
There wasn’t such ebullient praise for PlayStation 3. “They need to find a way to get to $399 and then see what happens. I’m not sure the 80GB model is going to have a profound effect. I’m also not sure what they’re going to do with all that extra space. I was expecting an announcement of a full video download service, but it just isn’t there.”

Peter Moore
What I like about Peter Moore is that he doesn't dismiss Nintendo he actualy admits to them being a threat where as Sony don't and they just come up with things like "oh its a gimmick it will wear off" Its been 6+ months since the wii has been launched and in the UK it is still really hard to find one. And Sony have a go at Nintendo about gimmicks and then they go and reveal that card thing for the eye toy and the the thing they mentioned previously about the PSP acting as a rear view mirror for a racing game. Then they have a go at Nintendo about gimmicks. ¬.¬
Re: Peter Moore
Dale of course he admits Nintendo is doing well thats was there campaign thats how they get you. Oh he not talking bad about the Nintendo because they are not a threat they are running in first alone with there first party's while the war is between PS3 and Xbox 360 there the ones fighting for the exclusive and 3rd parties. This guy cant admit PS3 is the best console event thoght they last right now its just a mater of time they alredy learn from there mistake the best example is E3 07'. Microsoft came with these huge holidays list of game oh wait they well must third parties thats the PS3 also has, where are the new original game the exclusives, wait they dont have they think they can survive by just making on huge game every year and then combining it with the third parties. First Halo awesome then Gears even better now Mass Effect but thats it one great exclusive every year. One year Halo one Gears now Mass lol its a joke. This is why 2chan insulted the Xbox cuz they suck in japan. While they Sony own E3 07' with lots of new exclusive exclusive original games thats whats E3 is for for the news not to tell as what we already now. What about from January till next holiday what games for the Xbox are coming then???
Re: Peter Moore
How can anybody still listen to a guy who fails miserably at M$$. Let's not pay attention to him anymore. From a guy who left his favorite company after admitting that there was some major design flaws with the 360 and M$ will loose over a billion dollars for his mistakes.

Re: Peter Moore
hello just one word peter moor try to give xbox 360 the good thing that make it the best okay and thats an order okay
Re: Peter Moore
Peter Moore is a faillure himself, who is he to talk about Sony?? I don't give a damn shit about what he says?!
X360 is in first place JUST because they launched 1 year ahead, if not they where in 3rd place crying out loud.
X360 sucked before, sucks now and will always suck, bad hardware, expensive has hell considering what it delivers, not relliable at all, no new ways to play games, and not even a full hand of triple A games.... their luck is the blind fanboys and the dumb american people that wil always defend american crap products.
Re: Peter Moore
I retract what I said. I'm a total retard. I can't help it that I'm anti-American and anti-MS.
Speaking of blind fans...I'm just another blind Sony fanboi - I don't quite have a grasp on reality. We've lost soooo many exclusives that me and my PS3 now live in a state of inferiority. poor me.
I wish many of the games that I have on my PS3 had online multiplayer like the XBL service. I think I'll get a 360 - it's lonely in the PS3 online world.
Re: Peter Moore
Pete Moore!! You are leaving M$ and the next gen race!!! Why are you still talking trash!?!?!? Get ready for your new job, which by the way you MUST work with Wii's people, M$'s people, and Sony's people!!
PS. Both 360 and PS3 will tie for 1st!! Both are great and bad in their own way!! It makes no since to trash talk!!!
Re: Peter Moore
hes a fucken retard, wtf is he talking bout, ps3 is outselling 360 and will continue doing that until his piece of shit xbox stops beaking al the time
Re: Peter Moore
MK24ever, you are right. I know the second post wasn't by you, but Peter Moore needs to do something else besides criticize an amazing company that he doesn't even work for. Not only did Microsoft have a bad E3 this year compared to Sony, but it's sales in Japan are abismal! From December of 2006 to July of 2008, the Playstation 3 has sold 1.01 million units. The Xbox 360 launched A YEAR EARLIER and has sold only .42 million units in Japan! I guess that's what happens when you don't have an HDMI output, 1080p graphics, support for the winning HD format, Blu Ray, 60GB of memory, or Sixaxis controllers. I don't like talking about sales, because sales don't mean that an individual system is good, but 360 sales have recently plummeted 60%f you all wan't to nitpick about sales, then do so. Think of this; Which sells more, a Ferrari or a Toyota? The Toyota. Which is better? The Ferrari.
This is the Playstation 3's situation. It's the most powerful console, and with great games like LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Haze, Warhawk, Lair, and Heavenly Sword coming out, it will stay that way. It's not selling as much compared to... the Wii for example, but that's because the Wii is very cheap, and appeals to children. You Wii fanboys can't deny that and say, "Oh, but teh Wii is 4 older gamorz!" I wonder why it has games like the Ant Bully, Ratatouille, Cars, Billy and Mandy, or Meet the Robinsons. When it comes down to sales, the Wii is doing well, because it's cheap. The Xbox 360 is doing okay, but that's because it launched a year earlier. The Playtation 3 is selling well for a $600 console because it's worth it. Now with the price cut, which was smart on Sony's behalf, the sales have already increased greatly. Like I said, I don't want to focuse on sales, but if it concerns people like Peter Moore, go ahead, let it concern you.
Re: Peter Moore
Erik Payne, you're right. The PS3 and 360 have good features and bad features. There's just so many HATERS out there. Mostly, it seems to be the oppressed PS3 fanboys. Next gen gaming started without them. They had to wait an entire year before getting into the "game".
The original XBOX came out, and was/is a better machine than the PS2. It immediately started with games that were simply graphically superior. But the XBOX couldn't get it started devs department...oh - and Japanese tend to want Japanese PRODUCTS! That's the only reason the XBOX (and the 360) doesn't do well in JAPAN. Come on! Use some common sense here!
The problem is, the PS3 came out a year AFTER the 360. They SHOULD have came out with a game that was superior to the 360...but it didn't happen. That is only a part of what started the PS3s bad karma...and is STILL a problem.
The next gen is about GAMES more than anything...PS3 needs to get it's act together.
IMO: The 360 is still the machine to get for games. However, if you want a blu-ray player, with the price drop - then the PS3 is the way to go.
Re: Peter Moore
I BELIEVE THAT THE XBOX 360, NINTENDO Wii, AND THE PLAYSTATION 3 ARE ALL GREAT SYSTEMS, AND THEY ALL HAVE THEIR EXCLUSIVE GREAT GAMES. SO THE WINNER WILL BE ALL THE VIDEO GAMERS OF EARTH. SO THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM BUY ALL THREE, PS3, XBOX 360, AND THE NINTENDO Wii.
Re: Peter Moore
To the dumbass that posted with my nickname I only have a few things to say.
I don't hate America or the American people, I just don't like the way "American press and many american bloggers" sensationalizes everything, sometimes I feel that american people are mind controlled by their government and media. Nuclear weapons in Iraq, international terrorists are everywhere, let's kill them all and bring peace to the world (yeah right...) Iran is making nuklear plants to make Atomic bombs... bla bla bla...
The same hapens with everything else, when I open google and search in the news engine for PS3 the first thing I notice is some kind of fantastic headline like:
PS3 burned a house or something similar...
And Peter Moore is the reflect of that kinf of sensacionalism stupidity, I think "America" must get one thing straight, they ARE NOT the all world, and world believes no more in nothing of that american politics or the media says.
For me things are very simple about the consoles war:
Re: Peter Moore
Sony = Stupid
Re: Peter Moore
Wow, Sony is stupid? That's all you have to say? I wish I had people like you backing up our side. 360 fanboys are so intellectual, aren't they?
To whoever said the Xbox is better than the Playstation 2, I suggest you kick your crack habit. Not only have Xbox supporters pointed out that MS jumped the bandwagon and ditched out on the Xbox too early, but it had inferior games and 3rd party support compared to the PS2. 120 million people don't lie, especially when you ask them how reliable and revolutionary the Playstation 2 has been.
Most importantly, the Playstation 3 did not start a year late. The Xbox 360 started a year too early, and you should own up to the mistake. The Wii and the PS3 both launched in 2006, a majority. When 2 out of 3 consoles launch at the same time, the 3rd is either the latter or the earlier of the trio. Saying the PS3 and Wii launched a year too late is like saying that 66% of the players on a team who showed up at 6:00 are late, whereas 33% showed up at 5:00. In reality, the majority of the players could not have been wrong, so they showed up at the right time.
Re: Peter Moore
Peter Moore is a joke and so is the 360. It's the dreamcast of this generation. Even with a year lead it is losing market share to the Wii. Why because the good games are all FPS. Any other game can be found on other consoles. It is simply a losing strategy. The 360 offers no value. Once the math is done buying a $400 or $479 console with the live service costing $50 a year they are shooting themselves in the foot. Out of the roughly 200 million gamers only 10 million signed on to it. When the got tired of paying for it they brought a PS2. If MS does not get off it's high horse and eat the cost the will lose out again.
Like the XBox the 360 was rushed and the results speaks for itself. Sony was in the same position with dreamcast but they came out at there own pace and ruled the market. I believe if they stop pushing the hardcore gaming crap they could rule again.

Re: Peter Moore
Ahhh...Chris. Just stop it. You're making yourself look like a complete moron.
I never said that the XBOX was better than the PS2. I said that the XBOX MACHINE was better. Do your research. You didn't read my post - I said that MS couldn't get the devs involved enough to be as successful as it should have been.
As far as the: The 360 had better launch title releases than the PS3, the PS3 continues to lag waaaaay behind on games.
GRAW2 isn't even going to be out for the PS3 until the end of August (almost 1/2 year after the 360). Oblivion, Rainbow Six Vegas...the list goes on and on. By the time the PS3 gets these games...we've gotten bored of them and have moved on.
The PS3 continues to get delays on there games. Everytime - the PS3 fanbois speculate that "they're gonna optimize for our CELL!". Then, it's released, and graphic and game comparisons between the 360 and PS3 are evaluated...the PS3 falls short again. So, all you're *really* getting is delays. -enjoy.
I hear it from people like you ALL the time...you're like a broken record.
"I got my PS3 for "title goes here" exlusives..."
Then, a month later...you loose more exclusives...your list gets shorter and shorter.
There's just so many of you HATERS out there. You're oppressed. You're favorite team is losing and will continue to lose...it's because you're on the wrong side.
Sony: "The next gen won't start until we start it..."
Cocky...arrogant - that's who you're supporting.
I HAVE been enjoying the "next gen" games an entire YEAR before your PS3 even came out.
A year after the 360 came out - XBL has contracted with Disney, Warner bros...etc. The shear amount of Demos we can download is only on Sony fans "wish" list.
Now, I'm not going to say that the 360 doesn't have it's faults.
The hardware DOES break. I had my 360 for a year, and it died. But, I shipped it back to MS and they returned it...all within 9 days. (and they gave me a some free services as well - for my inconvenience).
Now, I have peace of mind for 3 years since MS extended the warrantee.
Re: Peter Moore
I don't think the 360 is the greatest, but the PS3 is a failure in the U.S. The online system blows, the games are always lesser versions of the 360 versions, the pads don't rumble... it still costs too much... there aren't enough games and the ones it has aren't that great... and the Wii is the kiddiest piece of a joke ever. I don't even take Nintendo seriously. I prefer serious games. None of the systems this gen are great, but the 360 is the clear winner.
One more thing... I've had my system since launch and I've never had a problem. Of course I take care of it properly which is one reason why I've had no problems. The fact is that most of the people crying about their 360 breaking are the same people who have no clue on how to keep the system cool and well ventilated. Or the complete ******s who are dumb enough to put it inside an entertainment center.
