Sony to release cut-price $399 40GB PS3

Sony to release cut-price $399 40GB PS3

Or so claims Microsoft, which insists that failure this Q4 will be the end of PlayStation

Microsoft’s director of technical strategies Andre Vrignaud has predicted that Sony will launch a cut-price 40GB PS3 this Q4 in an effort to maintain competitiveness in the next-gen console war.

Speaking to N’Gai Croal at Level Up, Vrignaud stated: “A single, $599 SKU would be untenable – if they don't move significant hardware this holiday they'll basically be dead for this generation.

“My prediction is that you're going to see the creation of a new, low-end SKU this holiday. It'll likely remove integrated wi-fi, memory card reader, and most controversially, all backward compatibility.

“You'll see a new wi-fi dongle made available. And finally, this low-end SKU will likely come with a smaller 40 GB hard drive. The low-end price will be set at $399, with the higher-end 80 GB SKU dropping to $499.”

He concluded by predicting an October launch. We shall see.

I know mind games are a tool that is employed a lot in the world of sport but videogames? It could happen just as easily as it couldn't, but by publically coming out with this, are Microsoft signally their intend to start a pricing war?

No, Sony will release a mega new 200gig system with 2 blu-ray drives and quad HDMI... see, I can make bullcrap up to.

POST THIS, THIS IS NEWS!

But seriously, MS is trying to shift the press away from the faulty console issue and break Sony's recent good buzz.

Says: "Don't buy now, wait for $399"...

The's just an attempt to say, "Don't buy now, wait for later and buy for $399", effectively buying MS some time until they have readied a 360 to compete... or what ever. Why does MS even care about the PS3 ?

Total nonsense. Why would sony DISCONTINUE the 60gb version to introduce a 40gb one? Total BS.

Plus, dont forget one of the head guys of sony saying that if they cut prices, that would only ANNOY customers!

It doesn't say anything about discontinuing the 60GB model - this would be in addition. do read the news story next time. and don't bitch at mcv for the story - they're obviously as sceptical as anyone judging by the tone.

Yet another rant from a supposed technical director! With those comments no wonder Microsoft built a flawed console!

If you had been reading regularly you would have noted that the 60GB IS being discontinued in the US. Which makes the point of "Why would they discontinue a 60GB to make a lower-less profitable model?". So make sure you know everything before you start moaning about people "bitching" about microsoft mr anonymous.

Why is this being reported as news???

EVERYONE knows this guy goes by the alias "Ozymandias" and that he runs an anti-PS3 blog spreading FUD. He probably spends more time hating the PS3 than keeping tabs on his own system, hence the bad design and eventual hardware failure of ALL xbox 360's.

Microsoft should not even be worrying about Sony. They're doing better than Sony anyway. Microsoft, just deal with your own problems and forget about Sony.

Does Vrignaud read the GAMESRADAR FORUMS?

Well does Vrignaud read the Gamesradar forums? As far as I know, I read this prediction over at GR from forumites way before he made that statement, and his quote is eerily similar, very very similar in fact for it to be a coincidence.

How about Vrig you STFU, do your job, and stop ripping predictions from forums. Your job isn't to badmmouth the competition, leave that to Moore, he does a better job of it you. You just focus on fixing my damn machine.
