Microsoft to lower price of popular add-on to $179 in US
Xbox is set to drop the price of the 360 HD-DVD add-on from $199 to $179 on August 1st in the US, reports Next Generation.
The firm will also offer five free HD-DVD movies with the hardware from a selection of 15 titles, which is an extension of Toshiba’s HD-DVD promotion initially available on standalone players.
Microsoft is also promoting the HD-DVD release of 300 and Heroes: Series One by offering the HD version of 300 on Xbox Live Marketplace from August 14th and alongside the pilot episode of Heroes.
On the other side of the format war, Sony is championing a similar offer, whereby customers can choose five movies from a list of 21 titles. The offer began in July and will run through to September.

I made the switch and didn't look back
HD movies shouldn't really have anything to do with games consoles but with them becoming so powerful it's not surprising.
Previously I was a 360-only owner and simply couldn't resist getting into HD movies via the HD-DVD addon for the 360. But months later the REAL problem started to become more of an issue. Movies, or lack thereof.
I am now very lucky to own a 360 AND a PS3 which enabled me to choose both Blu Ray and HD-DVDs. Subsequently I actually sold my HD-DVD addon as the amount of movies which interested me on Blu Ray were beginning to seriously outweigh those on HD-DVD.
So this price cut simply doesn't surprise me at all, even without getting picky about things such as fan noise, I honestly believe that HD-DVDs good start is now beginning to suffer albeit slowly. Hats off to Microsoft for making it an OPTION though instead of forcing the cost onto us, the consumer. In the long run though, I think it may actually pay off for Sony.
