Firm demands ‘destruction’ of Sony’s Cell processor

Parallel Processing claims PS3 CPU infringes patents

A company named Parallel Processing claims that Sony’s much touted PS3 processor, the Cell, infringes one of its existing patents, and is demanding the “impounding and destruction” of Sony’s entire chip stockpile.

Next-Gen reports that a lawsuit filed on July 26th claims that a patent called “Synchronized Parallel Processing with Shared Memory”, which was filed in 1991, describes a computational process very similar to Sony’s Cell.

Parallel Processing says that Sony’s alleged actions have caused “irreparable harm and monetary damage” to the company, and as a result it is seeking damages, reimbursement of legal fees, interest and “the impounding and destruction of all Defendant’s products that infringe the patent.”

Thats what I was thinking, How can a company sue someone who actually made a go of something and actually made the product...(If indeed the patent is the same thing as the cell).

its dispicable, go kick ass sony, crush them like a paper cup.

I mean how rediculous is this lawsuit. I once had an idea of making a paper clip by using quantum physics. Unfortunately for me someone found an easier way to do it. You don't see me suing them..!!

Just some guys trying to make a quick buck..!

I dont know how big "Parallel Processing" are but if they havent done anything about thier "patent" since '91 then they cant be that big. SONY should buy them out... or Google could buy them (and be nice to SONY), or SONY and Google could buy them...
Anyway, isnt the CELL processor IBM's doing? ( http://www.research.ibm.com/cell/ )

i wouldn't want to be in the shoes of anyone working at that so called 'parallel processing company', i guess if any PS3 fan would find out the whereabouts of it they might be in for some massive rotten tomatoes + eggs throwing :P

but seriously.....the patent was filed a long time ago, obviously they never used the potential of the chip and i doubt it is exactly the same, its like filing a patent for a computer chip in general, pfffff!
btw ibm wants to use the same chip in theyre servers, next lawsuit? :)

What bothers me is most of the parrallel processing concepts/development ariginated from Transputers which have been around forever. It's bloody annoying to see someone make a tweak on existing tech, get a pantent and then only litigate when someone does something similar. A decade and a half of non-activity just to litigate is crap.

HAH!! The PS3 is going to continue killing Sony's chance in the market. It's a horrible design and developers hate it. This box never should have been created.

come on, just one more stupid incompetent little company trying to take advantage of someone else's success. Remember the rumble controller's lawsuit !? it is the same thing... a company that has something on paper and do nothign about it. And again, Cell is IBMs, and isnt parallel processing everywhere nowadays !?!? ... this are just 2 things to put this acusations down...
