But, says famed designer, don’t underestimate casual gamers
In an interview in the latest issue of Famitsu, Shigeru Miyamoto has spoken about how he intends to balance difficulty and accessibility in Super Mario Galaxy.
At last June’s E3 conference, Miyamoto said that Nintendo intended to break down the wall separating hardcore and casual games.
When asked by Famitsu how Super Mario Galaxy fitted into this, he said: “When we started these new ways to play with this new interface, I was a little suspicious that a beginner would be able to beat a veteran.”
“But, actually, that’s not the case. In the Super Mario Club [the debugging team at Nintendo], there are lots of part-timers that haven’t played games before. But, give them two weeks playing a game, and there’ll be some that are better than a lot of the other members. Even my wife always gets better scores than me in one of the More Brain Training games.
“So, regarding skill, I don’t think there is a ‘wall’ between casual gamers and hardcore gamers. The thing is, even core gamers will play ‘casual’ games. Essentially, we should be making games that are fun but aren’t difficult. In other words, trying to make a game fun using difficulty isn’t any good. With Super Mario Galaxy, while searching for new and interesting things, we’ve tried to build a game that beginners can play well without us underestimating them or going easy on them.”
Super Mario Galaxy is due out later this year.

At last!
Rockstar, this is where you're missing the mark. There's nothing wrong with adult themed games, it's just, thats not all there is to gaming. ;-)
Re: Here here
Miyamoto still thinks he is the video game god, the problem is hes still stuck in the 80s and 90s and think's these gamers are still 15 years old.
Ohh and don't forget he could create HALO if he wanted to.
Re: Here here
Used to love nintendo. gamecube was my last nintendo system thought as i am 30 and just don't want a developer making kiddie games and telling me that's what i want. Oh well nintendo. couldve made a $500 kick butt machine and i wouldve dropped for it like i did for elite 360 and ps3 but alas. maybe i'll get a wii for my kids when its $99 bucks and black. Maybe. bcuz there are all sorts of fun and casual games on both xbox live and ps network for $5 i can download for my family and me. Super rub a dub anyone. and it wasnt $50 just to have a pretty white dvd case with and acronym for releasing your bodily fluids stamped all over it.
Re: Here here
Well GTA's been the top selling game in the west for the last few years, Rockstar do their thing and Nintendo do theirs, Nintendo don't have to change and neither do rockstar.
Re: Here here
Miyamoto isn't stuck in any era. And he doesn't think he's a god; the entire world does. And that's because he makes great games. You're a moron and you should thank your lucky stars for him, because it's because of his work that you can play your precious "hardcore" games.
