Now Epic questions 360 disc capacity

Mark Rein follows Bizarre Creations’ lead by saying Unreal Tournament might be compromised

Just two weeks after Bizarre Creations both confirmed and then denied that the storage limits of Xbox 360’s DVD format has lead to cuts in the feature-set of Project Gotham Racing 4, Epic’s Mark rein has now said that the 360 version of Unreal Tournament III might pack fewer features than its PS3 counterpart.

CVG quotes Rein as saying: “We'll compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version. Blu-Ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom.

“If you think down the road, well maybe the next UT beyond this one, on Blu-Ray disc, we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make.”

Not really a problem. Just make the maps, extra race tracks etc... downloadable content. Better still free!

Typical, jon, if you can't say it without swearing, keep it shut. Whats wrong with using the 120gb hdd thats out soon? just download the extra bits. No problem. This is just idle scare mongering. and as for being obsolete? I think not, so far it's been the PS3 thats had its features cut when compared to the 360 titles. and most of the games that have ahd dates slip recently have either been ps3 titles, or have had something to do with release rights and the ps3, and the game not being ready.
So, how about we stop acting like a fanboy, and make some real comments?

Oh yeah, a 120 gig drive. That's a great solution -- for one or two games. Do the math: one BR disc holds 50 gig. Face it, MS is stuck in the past with DVD, and soon will need to sell everyone a new upgraded console to be able to handle the next-next-gen content that the PS3 already has. Sony has effectively raised the bar, the game developers are noticing and taking advantage, and now MS will have to struggle to jump this hurdle. Start saving your money now so that you can soon buy your third Xbox!!

I'm not talking about full game downloading, that would be stupid, i mean, you'd need about a gazzillion GB. I simply meant downloading the extra's that wont fitthe disk, or whats wrong with going 'old skool' and doing what the old FF series used to do, and going multidisk?
there's plenty of solutions out there.
And the only thing Sony needs to raise is its frame rates, not 'the bar.'

there is a fps game called .kkreger (or something) which is a full level, with 5 guns, and 10 enemies, with doom3 style graphics. That is 97kb only.

If Mark Rein and his team are so good, why don't they work out how to make things smaller AND prettier, the way ID software has done with the Megatexture technology on the ID TECH 5 engine.

Having more storage space is good, but making the best use of what you have is better.

Does the PC version of the game us Blue ray? I think not, therefore his statement must come from sony (along with a little bonus for promoting blue ray)

He is also trying to piss off MS for not allowing his company to give away the GOW maps for free (IMHO)

Albatraous: got to agree with you there mate, it's a little suspect that all these 'pro' ms studios are suddenly getting on their horses over blu-ray, just at a time where Sony are being kicked in the teeth by both MS and Ninty.
@ OTWarrior. You have a very good point there mate, but we all know that the inherent lazyness of some developers means they'll prolly opt for using HDD space rather than trying to find a 'proper' work around.

Hey you all talking about the PC thing. Just because PC doesn't use blueray doesn't mean that it doesn't have Hard Drive. In case that you forgot not all 360's have a Hard Drive. So they may be able to use some of pc's hard drive to installpart of game.

Sticking it on multiple disk may not be that easy. It may force a situation where u are constantly switching disk. Multiple disk for an RPG is easier than for a FPS, especially if u are going to use it online. Blue ray is a better option.

i find it funny people complaining on how long it took to release the ps3 and yesterday we had ps3 put through hot, cold, normal temperatures
big probs with 360 with overheating RING OF DEATH and now game companies going on about the problems with trying to get all the dater on the 360 dvd
and all i can say is i think microsoft should have spent more time on the console
or get the japs to do it for them

Actually Viz a blu-ray disc holds about 25 gig so dual layer is only around 50 ish gigs.

Back onto topic I think Epic are just being a little lazy, no we have all this space more developers are taking it for granted and no squeezing as much in as they did before becuase they feel they dont have to.
Funny how they dont mention how this will affect the PC dvd release, if lots of mods/maps come out let us just download them, simple as.

actually a standard disc is 50gb for blue ray, and they have recently developed a 100gb disc (ofcourse more expesnvie and wont be used as 50gb is huge enough ) (for now) and its been estiamted by EXPERTS i cant find the link but that blueray can go up to 200 gb. i think that is more than enough, and by the time they need to use that we might be using sd cards for everything instaed of discs

Frm a 360 owner saving for a ps3 dam wish i didnt waste my money on 360 (only got it for halo ;) )

Why does everyone keep going on about how amazing blueray is... has no-one noticed that even the most ridiculous sized games still fit on normal DVDs (i.e. pc games)

Crysis is miles ahead of any game in terms of next generation content and it still fits on a dvd... 8.5Gb is and still will be for a long time, plenty of space to store a game on.. all these ps3 narrow minded fanboys are starting to irritate me...

And as previously said, it is true that current developers are being very lazy when it comes to programming, if all games were programmed with utmost concern for space and efficiency of coding, they wouldn't take up half as much space. After doing some coding myself at University you quickly realise how even the smallest lines of code can be condensed.
