Wii eyes up UK market leadership

Nintendo’s machine is on track to become UK’s best selling next-gen console by October

Eurogamer reports that according to official figures Nintendo’s Wii console is on track to hit one million UK hardware sales within three to four weeks, taking it past the GameCube’s total installed UK base in the process.

More importantly, if sales trends continue the Wii is on track to become the best-selling next-gen console in the UK by the end of October, surpassing Microsoft’s Xbox 360 – which hit the market a year ahead of Nintendo’s machine.

However, with the Xbox 360 Elite due out shortly, along with next week’s Bioshock, September’s Halo 3 and a possible (albeit still denied) price cut, Microsoft’s machine could yet see a sudden surge in sales.

Wii is currently outselling Xbox 360 by more than four to one, and the PS3 by more than six to one.

Sure the Wii is well on track, but it could come to a screeching halt if Nintendo don't bring out new original games.

Mini game compilations, the Virtual console and brain training games only have a limited appeal to the gaming enthusiast and while non-gamers are buying it now Nintendo may find it hard to keep sales up long term.

If things continue as they are the Wii may suffer a sharp decline late next year.
