Sony development boss says ‘trend is reversing’

Head of Sony’s worldwide studios Phil Harrison has said that the trend of titles being made for Xbox 360 and then ported over to PS3 is ‘reversing fairly quickly’.

Speaking to GameDaily, Harrison said that the power of the PS3 is starting to be ‘clearly demonstrated’ to developers, who are more commonly beginning to create titles for the Sony system from the ground up.

“We are clearly demonstrating the PS3 is capable of some amazing things and if you approach the architecture from the right direction, your games will shine on the platform,” he said.

“It's very natural, however, to see what some of the third parties are doing. They started to work on Xbox 360 before they did on PS3; they got some tools and technology and know-how established on the format before PS3. That situation will reverse fairly quickly organically, but what we're doing from a worldwide studios point of view is we're actually shifting some of our core technologies from exclusively being available to our studios to supporting third parties as well – all third parties.”

Yea he is absolutely right, John Carmack who is known to be vocally outspoken against Sony has even said from a business and programming point starting out on the PS3 and porting the code over to the 360 would be extremely easier than going the other way around.

I believe him. Seriously! 10 cans of stella and a bottle of whiskey, and the guy makes sense! That's why its the leading console. And that its outselling the 360 by 20 to 1. Hang on, just had some coffee, whats this guy on with? seriously?

ok is it me or are game developers more interested in money and making a good game as opposed to which system they can get slightly better graphics out of. at the end of the day sony and microsoft should expect similar games as they have put themselves in a position where its very expensive to make a game for their systems, on top of the fact the ps3 is selling poorly.
the big question is what are you doing to stop people jumping ship to a system that actually sells well (Wii), ........answer nothing! u sit there all deluded in the awe of your shiny doorstop

Amm... Are they ever going to acknowledge that PS3 is a commercial failure? What are they waiting for to cut prices down to sub-$400?

Its not PS3 vs 360...its PS3 vs 360/PC With most major releases for the 360 being dual PC releases as well, its no contest as far as market share is concerned. So 5 million PS3s vs 12 million 360s and a billion PCs (more like 100 million as most PCs arnt game worthy) Who are you gonna code for?

Will the flame wars ever stop?
The only good thing to come out of this is the fact that its good for gamers, software wise.

“Sony is dying...slowly.”

I'm afraid all the comments against Sony are right. I've been a dedicated Sony fan (up to PSP but not PS3) and Microsoft has the advantage of easy ports from the PC or other way, using various cross-over dev kits that they're, obviously, very good at producing (I think one is called XNA, right?)

Anyway, Sony are realising that their first gen dev kits for the PS3 were shite and kept third parties out of all the nice tricks their internal studios were able to do. So now, they're going to release all the decent libraries to third parties - but isn't it a bit late now?

Yes, the Revolution (I'm sorry, but I simply cannot bring myself to call it by its ridiculous market name) does have a novel control system and some games are keeping gamers happy but that will not last unless Nintendo garner more support from third parties and this does not seem likely at the moment, which should be their main worry and the worry of every Revolution owner - you can't play Sports forever!

Phil Harrison is premature to say what he's saying here, he doesn't know about every single game that third parties are developing because their NDA with Sony doesn't stretch to every IP they develop. So he's only talking about what he's seeing or perhaps even, what he's been promised, and we all know what can happen to promises, right?

As for David Reeves comments at Leipzig, good God! Is that man seriously on a payroll at Sony?! I mean, to even suggest that they're 'holding back' on game releases because they don't want to "overload the consumers" is RIDICULOUS and STUPID at the same time. All his comments say to me is that Sony has no games to release for this Xmas period, aside from the few disappointments coming out in the next few months and that's it - that's your lot for this year!

I think I'm going to buy myself a Vita-Mix with my £400 instead. It's multifunctional, it's got plenty of recipes to choose from and it gives owners 100% satisfaction guarantee or your money back - now that's something that Sony can only dream of right now...

Oh yeah, great point! One thing though, why don't you name those awesome third party games that are being developed exclusively for the PS3? Just a couple of examples, that's all.
