Microsoft talks up the effect price drop will have on Christmas market
Microsoft has shrugged off any fear that its Core Xbox 360 will struggle for prominence in the Christmas market – and told MCV that its price drop will tempt customers away from PS3.
The Core console’s price point falls to just £179.99 today – the same as Nintendo’s Wii – whilst the 20GB Premium model is reduced by £30 to £249.99.
And Microsoft’s UK marketing manager for the Xbox 360, Dan Cornelius, believes that the dip in price will steal the attention of new entrants to the market away from PS3 this Christmas.
“If you look at PS3, it’s a lot of money for families to come in at,” he told MCV.
“Sony is requiring a fairly novice gamer to enter into things like Blu-Ray and wireless gaming by default. The Core’s still doing well for us in the UK and the price drop is bound to produce a spike in sales. These customers like the fact that they don’t have to foot the bill for a load of technology they don’t need. It means we can gain access to a type of consumer that PS3 cannot.”
The firm also rolls out the 120GB Xbox Elite at retail today, with an SRP of £299.99. “With the launch of Elite and the price drop, the delta in terms of value for money between 360 and PS3 gets broader,” added Cornelius. “We feel we’re in a stronger position than our competitors in the run up to Christmas.”

Try outselling the PS2 first
It makes me laugh that they are not even outselling the PS2 yet. It sold about 50,000 more than the 360 last month in the US so what hope have they got when the PS3 is a lot cheaper?
Think about that for a second. The 7 year old PlayStation is still selling more than Microsoft's 2 year old one. That's should give you an idea of how many PS3s will sell when the price is much lower. I would be willing to bet that in 5 years the PS3 will have sold double what the 360 has.
There is massive demand for the PS3 as evidenced by the amount of people complaining about the price. After all you don't complain about the price of something you don't want.
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
Too bad the 360 keeps breaking down (my 3rd 360) at least the PS3 is a solid console!!!
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
Dude, how much is the PS2, how many games has it got?Has nothing to do with the brand! If the ps3 was £90 and had the back log of game it would out sell the wii!! your comments are b0ll0x!
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
Well, I'd agree with Jason on most of his points as the sales figures do say a lot. However, throw-in the different problems publishers face when developing or publishing games for each console and another opinion (and set of problems) comes strongly in to view. This in turn shapes the type of products and by default, the consumer that will make up the audience for each console in question.
Also, of significant importance is mobile technology in general, and suddenly Nintendo looks better placed to take advatnage of where we might be in 5 years time. Do all the owners of PS2s wish to continue playing at home, or given the choice would they have chosen to play on a mobile device?
Whilst the sales stats speak volumes you can't take them as an accurate template for a future consoles' success, or lack thereof.
Thankfully there's more than one option for the end user.
The debate rolls on...
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
Yeah MS you make no sense. Slash the price on the over heating core box but then post 'HD Required' on future game releases? Who are they kidding? Oh wait, the novice consumer!! Most unreliable product ever made, the xbox.
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
360 is a joke, it got its year alone, and that's it. It'll probably see a spike from HALO3, but that's it. Its a ~25 Million unit seller, and thats assuming they can keep them from breaking down at a 30% failure rate.
There is just no reason to buy a 360 anymore. Halo will give it its last hurrah. Wii has it beat hands down on the fun and enjoyment end, and PS3 has it beat in hardware. Price is the only variable its got left to play, and frankly that's not, nor is it ever enough.
XBOX division has burned over $20 BILLION dollars and continues to lose money hand over fist, and there is no end in sight to this either. Investors should be demanding MS stop throwing good money after bad.
They will wind up 3rd place in this generation, and try to launch early in the next one, forcing another piece of unreliable crap out before they should trying to leg up, only to repeat the same losses once again.
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
I've got 2 360's and never had a problem with either! MS has fixed the overheating issues and gives a 3yr warranty if you do get the Red Lights at no cost. I had a PS2 and guess what? The thing broke on me 3 times but it's funny how the memory of Sony droids fade. Unlike MS, Sony told me to buzz off and basically had to be taken to court in order to respond to it's problems.
The PS3 is a good piece of hardware to look at! As a gamer the thing is worthless! It has basically no games, and multiplatform games look and play better on the 360, the PS3 controller is total garbage with tacked on SIXAXXIS and don't get me started on their online network. It's a decent Blu-ray player but the last time I checked I buy a GAME console to PLAY GAMES. PS3 = overhyped!
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
I bought an Xbox 360 ~ 1.5 months ago, it failed right the same day I played it, then brought in for exchange and failed again. I literally think it is a piece of Garbage. I decided to buy PS3 and have played 3 games which I think beat X360. If I sound bias , I am, because garbage have a tendency to bias people. Microsoft, please stick to making OS.
LOL
LOL LOL LOL
sure as hell didnt convince me. LOL LOL
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
I think Jason has somewhat of a point. The 360 has Tarnished it image with people who have purchased it's console only for it to fail 3 or more times on them. The reason why the PS2 won the last Generation was because of it's broad game library. Now we can see some of the Games that will be coming to the PS3 and it is continuing that Heritage it will have games in genre's from Racing,Sports,RPG's,FPS,Action,Adventure,Puzzle, etc etc etc it pretty much evenly puts games out there.
The high price point is all that is holding the PS3 back 999.98 that is a whole lot of money to put down for a game system. The one thing Sony is having a problem understanding is that people rather see price cut's rather that forced packs. So as long as that price barrier is there the PS2 or Wii will be what they choose or if they want inexpensive HD game machine then they might pick the 360 but at the risk of it breaking down on them of course a lot of Parents probably don't know of the problems so it's 50/50 on what they will choose all depending how knowledgeable the consumer is. The one thing Jason hit on the head though was the PS3 is the Console people want or else people wouldn't be complaining about the price so much. SO TRUE SO TRUE!!!
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
"XBOX division has burned over $20 BILLION dollars and continues to lose money hand over fist."
So how much has Sony spent, and how much is it losing on PS3? Let's keep it in perspective.
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
WOW they convinced I'd rather spend another 600 for a Ps3 than to buy a 360. So what your console went down a few. All they keep doing is releasing more versions of 360. I want to play games not different styles of a console. Then to enjoy my 360 i have to pay a subscription fee to get online but wait if my friend comes over we need to buy another headset. PS3 doesnt have that problem everyone has a bluetooth so youre set. Hey let me buy 300 in HD oh wait I have to buy the drive for it. Ok I have my drive my movie my games of course all im playing is gears of war oh wait bioshock came out an awesome game (it really is) 8 months later. Of course theres the awesome XBL but damnit I cant run a wire all the way across the house I need to get the wifi adapter too. Seriously if i wanted my gaming expierince to include assembling I'd have bought bought legos at least it has everything in the box i need.

The amount of fanboys now around these comment boards dismays me
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
o jesus you sonybots...relax...microsoft have a goal for themselves...don't talk shit about them until they fail at that goal...but that day will never come considering ps3 has no games...a shitty design (looks like my fridge)...and my friend shawn has had his ps3 harddrive deleted 4 times and the "revolutionary six axis controler" stopped working the first day...i told him to get a real system and get ready to play the best game ever...HALO 3!!! which will beat the shit out of any sucky ps3 games...and don't say "o killzone 2 will kill it"..the first one sucked dick...so what makes you think this one will rock?...yea fuckoff...rockstar finally made a good decision by making GTA IV for the 360...they realized that the ps3 was a peice of shit and wanted it on a good console...so what if the 260 has problems...nobody is perfect...they fixed the problem but sonybots still rag on it...they fixed it and even gave us a 3 year extended warranty...so all you sonybots, get a life and a real console!!! XBOX 360!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Try outselling the PS2 first
the ps2 has nothing to do with this. M$ has ripped billions of dollars from the tightly clenched fist of Sony since they have entered console business.
A business that Sony thought it had all to itself once it dispatched it's fellow Japanese competitor Sega (may the dreamcast rest in peace)
The staggering amount of market share that M$ has assimilated from Sony has prompted a brisk managerial shuffling of a few it's more prominent talking heads.
talk all you want to about the billions spent by M$,... the cost of entering and gaining recognition in the console business. M$ generates anywhere from 3-5billion a quarter.
and Bill Gates has to keep paid staff onhand to help him find more creative ways to give away money thru his many philanthropic endeavors.
Getting back to the ps2,.. the only reason it sells is because this is a nation of the "have's and have-nots",
what else would the people who serve your fast foods, staff your Walmarts, and check out your groceries buy?
and when these legions of underpaid workers get their quarter raise, whose system do you think they will buy?
after peering enviously over the fence of at a far greener pasture called the 360, .. a console that plays games that are at least equal to or better that those found on the Ps3 for $150 less.
if it weren't for SpidermanX and the ps2,,.. Sony would be filing bankruptsy.
Their arrogantly swaggering position of "Let them find a second job, or work overtime" philosophy has come back to bite them in the hind parts.
Because Now there is a Choice. and that choice is X360!

Actually crazymofo, I am a tool, albeit a finely honed one that's been carefully tuned and specifically calibrated to pierce the hyperbole diseminated by sony Pee - s3 - botomists like yourself.
you can make all the personal attacks about me that you want, talk about my mamma, and spit on my grave,

In fact they will prove virtually prophetic by the end of this holiday season
NOW THERE IS A CHOICE, SO REJOICE !
360's reputation is in tatters
I seriously doubt the 360 will sell much at all. It's reputation is in tatters with the reliability issues, and Microsoft sping (first you don't need a HDD, then you do, there is a HDMI for premium coming, then there is not, then you need to buy an elite for HDMI, then you get it in the premium and core, then you don't need HD DVD, then you do, and so on).
Almost everyone I know is totally disallusioned with the 360, and are now talking of selling their 360's and buying a PS3. Whilst Halo3, Bioshock and Mass Effect will help keep the lame 360 alive for a while longer, the PS3 has much better and more original exclusives this season.
360 is unlikely to do anything..
PS3 will seriously rule this Xmas, I don't think there is a shadow of doubt about that. Microsoft is desperate, and talking up the 360 in the hope there is anyone left that still believes them.
I'm buying a 360
It amazes me all this Sony fanboy rubbish that gets spouted by little boys that have absolutely no idea about how business works.
I'm a consumer... I am buying a games console to play games... I'm not buying a PS3! Why? Because it has no games and all the once PS3 exclusives are now being produced on the 360. Why? Because the cost of development for the PS3 is too expensive and they need to recoup that cost in order to maximize profits. It's also funny how Paramount and Dreamworks have also abandoned Blu-Ray and moved over to the HD-DVD camp. Another nail in the coffin of Sony.
I'm buying an 360 Elite. Why? To play games. I couldn't give a toss about blu-ray and if I want a high def player i'll wait to find out which format wins before making my choice on HD or Blu-Ray.
Reliability issues? Don't care. I'll get a 3 year warranty and if it breaks down it'll be replaced with a new unit.
Personally, I think the PS3 is going the way of the Dreamcast.
Re: I'm buying a 360
Firstly Blu Ray has pretty much already won the format war so dont use that excuse, i have both machines and since owning a PS3 my 360 hasnt been turned on and i cancelled my Xbox live subscription.
You seem to have forgot that when the 360 came out there was a lack of games for launch as well, if you use your PS3 propley all the media functions its limitless and provides far more value for money than the 360.
How you can call the PS3 ugly i cant understand you obviously the most unstylish guy inr eal life and have no design sense.
I predict just like the first Xbox the 360 life span will be very short compared to the PlayStation 3 which will have at least 7 or 8 years ahead.
Re: Tyler
Your friend is an idiot. He had to reformat his PS3 drive that many times because he improperly shut it off/quit out of games. There are about a dozen warnings on it that says "DO NOT TURN OFF THE SYSTEM WHILE THE HARDDRIVE LIGHT IS FLASHING." He quit out of whatever, thus corrupting the data. PS3 has a 0.2% failure rate. Compare that to the 360's rate. Which do you think is the better made hardware?
Anyhow, the format war isn't over; it's going to be long and drawn out unfortunately.
PS3 Games
How can people say the PS3 doesn't have games???? It has thousands.. Don't forget all the PS2 games you can still play on it. Xbox 360 may have Bioshock, Gears of War and Halo but ONLY if you like that kind of game and I don't. I like games like Motorstorm, Gran Turismo, SOCOM, and what looks to be the best game ever Metal Gear Solid 4- all PS3 games. There are others like GTA 4 coming out on both platforms but that's not enough to tempt me away from PS3. I had an Xbox 360 after seeing a friend's and Pro Evo Soccer. Guess what - both ours broke, and after 2 years neither of us bought more than 2 games. I got rid of mine, he kept his. Now I have a reliable machine that plays all my PS2 games which you have to remember there are more PS2 games coming out at any time than either Xbox 360 or PS3 so why wouldn't I play them? Xbox owneres are going to feel hard done by soon. Users are going to be forced into buying add ons for Xbox's (hard drives, wireless, HD DVD or Bluray) by which time the PS3 price will have dropped. Probably at the time as many predict that GTA 4 and MGS4 come out.
Re: PS3 Games
If I wanted to play PS2 games I would buy a PS2 and not fork out the exorbitant price of a PS3. If I buy a next gen machine I intend to play next gen games.
Blu-Ray hasn't won the format war at all. Only the other week Paramount and Dreamworks pulled out of Blu-Ray becuase they believe HD-DVD will win because the price point is better for consumers. On top of that most of the once Blu-Ray exclusives are now being produced in HD-DVD as well.
Re: PS3 Games
Don't really think the 360 has a problem outselling the PS3 anyway. Although its a solid, well built machine, there are just no games. 360 beats PS3 hands down on that front and thats the one that counts. No-one will buy a PS3 because of the radio tuner, or the freeview because everyone has these things already. Sony seem to have lost the plot. At least Microsoft realise its a GAMES MACHINE first and foremost.
The next year looks bleak for Sony on the games front as well when compared to 360. Thats why it will sell more.
Re: PS3 Games
you guys talk the most amount of shit the ps3 will win in the long run 360 will break down every 3-4 months send your 360 back for another one dumb ass'es ps3 has no game oh wait it just came out stupid ass retarded people.....
Re: PS3 Games
to whatever,
You think MS is just sitting there letting the same launch build go out everytime? obviously not theyve been improving the design over the last few months and the 65nm chips have started to be shipped, yes they'll have a month or two before all the older builds are sold before the more solid ones are on the shop loor but to say that people will need to get theirs repaired is quite ignorant.
Any company who gets their brand name tarnished will be doing their best to solve the problem and make sure it never happens again.
I guess maybe you like some of our othe posters above are more biased towards the ps3 and come onto these topics to bicker, sad really.
Re: PS3 Is A Dead Duck!
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/W...the-Week.xhtml
"PlayStation3 Impact
Not only was Blu-ray too expensive, the technology wasn't as far along as Sony led us to believe. The delays not only make the PS3 too expensive; they made it late. That was effectively a one-two punch, knocking Sony out of the lead so far in the game console business. Now, Sony is dead last by a significant margin.
This means that developers, instead of favoring Sony with their best stuff, are now concentrating on the Xbox first, and increasingly the Wii Latest News about Wii. That's because both have more homes, and thus represent a greater revenue opportunity, than Sony does.
So instead of the PS3 ensuring Blu-ray's success, right now it appears that Blu-ray may have effectively killed the PS3, at least in terms of market leadership. We'll have to wait until the PS4 before Sony has a chance to come back."
Re: PS3 Is A Dead Duck!
Don't think PS3 is quite a dead duck yet.
But the facts are that it has now sold one third of the quantity the Wii has and also only one third of the amount 360 has.
I kow 360 has been out a lot longer, but the worrying thing for Sony is that right now, PS3 is not selling as many as 360 week on week. Except in Japan, where both 360 and PS3 are selling very poorly when compared to the Wii. Over the last months, 360 has outsold PS3 worldwide. And with the serious lack of games on PS3, this looks set to continue. Looking at the 360 lineup, its hard to see a reason why the sales gap will not widen even more. There is hardly anything coming out on PS3. The only thing of note was GTA4 but that will be next year now. Adding insult to injury, 360 will be the only console that has the full GTA4 as two episodes will be missing from the PS3 version. Not just for a couple of months but for ever. For a true Gamer, there is one choice 360.
And both are supposed to be Games Consoles.
Re: PS3 Is A Dead Duck!
The biggest problem for the PS3 at the moment is not games but Blu-Ray. If Blu-Ray fails, the games developers will cease production of games. Consequently the demise of the PS3.
in 5 years?!
in 5 years are you kidding? in 5 years it will not matter because the next generation is on its way in a year or 2! thi sis one problem i have with the ps3 "it will be good at some point" no. unacceptable it needs to be good now it cant get away with catching up at the end of a generation.
