Manhunt 2 cleared for release in US

ESRB gives game Mature rating on PS2, PSP and Wii

Rockstar has finally received some good news over Manhunt 2: the game has been cleared for an October release in the US.

American ratings board the ESRB has granted the game an ‘M’ classification – which allows sale to consumers of 17 years and older – after Rockstar submitted a modified version of the title.

In June, Rockstar parent Take 2 was forced to suspend the release of the horror title when the ESRB issued an Adults Only rating.

"Manhunt 2 is important to us, and we're glad it can finally be appreciated as a gaming experience," said founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games Sam Houser.

"We love the horror genre. Manhunt 2 is a powerful piece of interactive story telling that is a unique video game experience. We think horror fans will love it."

The ruling is sure to give Rockstar’s UK HQ hope of gaining classification from the British equivalent of the ESRB, the BBFC.

The publisher is set to enter into an appeal hearing with the body in the next two months.

This is really good news and if it stays banned in the UK then the importers will do a good trade.

But at What Cost?

I'm glad that I'll finally be able to get this game, but I'm bothered by the thought of how much they possibly had to cut out in order to make the rating. Did they just cut back on the gore or did they rework the control mechanic's altogether?

I'm going to guess that the game hasn't been completely mutilated probably just some of the more brutal kills have modified or omitted. Remember that all 3 versions had been rated AO meaning that Wii controls had nothing to do with it. the level of blood also probably won't too toned down if at all, there are worse games.

Hmm... I will probably get this game but I also want to know what content was modified.

The content description still has blood, gore, strong sexual content, strong language, intense violence, and drug use

Exactly what pushed it over the top? All the ESRB people interviews about it talked about the tone of the game being off and the player being encouraged to do the vicious killings being an overall rather than specific problem.

ESRB is a crock

I think the ESRB really needs a overhaul. I mean, Manhunt 2 is akin to the movie Hostel which was a "R" rating, not a NC-17...which is what an AO rating is like.

I think the Wii version should be scrapped completely leaving the PS2 and PSP versions and l8r the PC version (wiv a patch to unlock BANNED content, lol).

Its the 'physical' killing motion i don't agree with as it will prob bring out demons in ppl that should be left well inside
