Ninja Theory leaps into Blu-Ray debate

Chief designer says Heavenly Sword has completely filled Sony’s 25GB disc

It was Sony’s decision to include its high-capacity Blu-Ray disc format in PS3 that has been attributed with driving up the price of the machine – so Sony will be delighted that yet another industry voice has spoken out in praise of the format.

Nina Kristensen, chief designer at Heavenly sword developer Ninja Theory, has said that the studio’s upcoming PS3 title has completely filled Sony’s 25GB disc – with the audio alone taking up more room than the total storage capacity on Microsoft’s dual-layer DVD.

CVG quotes Kristensen as claiming: “We have jam-packed the Blu-Ray disc absolutely full. We used compression all over the place. We had to be really judicious at the end with what was going on the disc and what wasn't.

“I think it's one of those things – if you give us the space we're going to fill it with stuff. It means the audio can be of a higher quality and stuff like that. It all adds to the quality of the package.”

The claims come not long after Bizarre Creations intimated that it has had to be frugal with its content for upcoming racer Project Gotham Racing 4 on 360 as a result of DVD’s limited storage capacity – though these statements were later retracted.

DvD not good enough?

I have said it before I will say it again, DvD is more than acceptable for high quality visuals/sound/content. The PC is higher res than any console, and all of the games fit on ONE DvD.

Sure, they say they have used compression, but they also say "if you give us the space we can fill it with stuff", so they are less concerned with making it fit, which would save them time rather than having to compress everything, but doesn't effect how they have designed the game.

Show me a game which is much better quality on PS3 than on PC (which both come on 1 disc) then we'll know that blueray is really needed.

'with the audio alone taking up more room than the total storage capacity on Microsoft’s dual-layer DVD.'

If they compressed using some form of MP3 format, how could they possibly fill a dual layer DVD. That's a hell of a lot of songs....

Ninja Theory are just saying what the hand that feeds them tells them to say. Can you imagine Bungie putting Halo 3 on multiple DVDs, or saying they ran out of space? Thought not...

Multiple DVD games are appearing, XB360 Blue Dragon anyone?
And multiple DVD games have been available on PC for a little while now.
Right now DVD is just enough but limits have been reached and compression can only go so far, in a few years there will be a more multi disc games.
DVD is far from done but it is starting to look its age.

Sorry to burst your bubble OTWarrior but UT3 is a 2 DVD game for the PC. Just because games aren't multi-DVD now doesn't mean that they won't be soon.

How do you know UT3 is a 2 DvD game, it isn't even out yet!
Don't state speculation as facts, you are not a politician!

Epic have confirmed that some of the maps are being left off the 360 DVD due to lack of space on the DVD.

ok "42", that means it is still a 1 dvd game but with a few maps left off not a 2 dvd game. And where did they confirmed this?

Bear in mind that the Blu-ray drive in the PS3 is only 1x speed. It really wouldn't surprise me to find out that a large amount of that 25GB that has been used is just duplicated content in order to avoid the dreaded seek logo that popped up in the original Resident Evil...

The BD drive in PS3 is 2X. Talk about grossly inaccurate info, Hamish.
