PS3 closes gap on Wii in Japan

But Nintendo system still outselling Sony format by three-to-one

The latest hardware sales figures from Japan suggest that Sony’s PS3 is gaining ground on the hugely successful Nintendo Wii.

According to Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, Nintendo sold 245,653 Wiis in the four weeks to August 26th, compared with 81,541 units for Sony's PS3.

Xbox 360 sold 11,288 units in the same period.

That means that the Wii outsold Sony’s system by three-to-one in the period.

However, as noted by The Times, that ratio is half the six-to-one sales figure Enterbrain reported back in June – and down from the four-to-one rate posted in July.

Its not closing the gap at all is it then. That would require them to sell MORE PS3's than there were Wii's sold. The gaps just only getting bigger fast as opposed to VERY fast surely?

This gap isn't getting smaller its getting larger!!

Nintendo sold more than 160k consoles in a month so the gap is increased by 160k.

The rate the gap is expanding has got smaller but the gap is increasing.

Umm...you guys are retarded, the gap is closing. What the math means is that the gap is that they are still being outsold but progressively by less. If the gap was increasing but not as fast, the ratio would still increase in Nintendo's favor.

Yes, arithmetic is very hard.

I haven't laughed quite that hard in a looooong time.

Look at the numbers in the post.

"Nintendo sold 245,653 Wiis"
"compared with 81,541 units for Sony's PS3"

erm...

The gap CAN'T get smaller until sony sell MORE PS3's in a month than Nintendo sell Wii's.

Don't think I can make it clearer than that, someone else can try if they like.

You're in a foot race. Your opponent is ahead of you, and moving away. As the opponent gets farther and farther away, do you say to yourself, "I'm gaining ground?"

Brandon I take it you are talking about the gap of monthly sales, where as we're talking about the gap of total hardware sales.

If Sony sold 1 apple in June and Nintendo sold 5 then the difference is 4 apples.

In July Sony sold 1 apple and Nintendo sold 4 then the difference is 3 apples. Sony has sold 2 apples in total and Nintendo has now sold 9.

Yes the gap in monthly sales has decreased but the gap in total sales has widened from a difference of 4 apples to 7 apples. The gap is bigger not smaller.

Which would you prefer to sell - 2 apples or 9?

Which console do you think developers/publishers/retailers will support more, a console that has sold 2 million consoles in a year or one that has sold 9 (to continue our apple example of course)?
