As firm prepares record-breaking £4m marketing spend for Halo 3
Microsoft is celebrating a gigantic spike in Xbox 360 sales – as it prepares to splash out a whopping £4 million on marketing for the release of Halo 3.
According to ChartTrack data, the platform holder enjoyed a 260 per cent rise in sales of its next-gen format two weeks ago (week 34), after introducing the Elite model to the market and dropping the price of its Core and Premium consoles.
Perhaps even more impressively, sales only dipped 20 per cent the following week (week 35) – leaving up-to-date calendar year sales 4.9 per cent higher than they were in 2006.
And now the firm is set to splash the cash on ‘phase two’ of its pre-Christmas 360 sales push with the release of system seller Halo 3 – which it is backing with what it calls the ‘biggest entertainment launch of all time’.
“We’ve seen what the previous two iterations of Halo did for console sales, so we’re anticipating an incredible amount of demand come the launch of Halo 3,” said Microsoft’s head of gaming and entertainment Stephen McGill.
“The day one revenue of Halo 2 was the biggest number for the launch of any entertainment property. That has since been surpassed by Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 3. But we’re confident Halo 3 will take back this accolade.
“It’s only when you start comparing figures to the launch of huge films that it really hits home – this really will be the biggest entertainment launch of all time.”

wow!
wow, those are some impressive sale figures. and it'll only get better for microsoft come halo 3 and then christmas. it seems more and more likely that MS will own this christmas. Good news for retailers too.
Re: wow!
Wow, these are completely unimpressive sales figures. We have no actual data so we don't know if the jump was from 100 units to 360 units or if it was from 100,000 to 360,000 units. Way to give useless information without providing any data.
Re: wow!
well it simply comes down to games available and microsofts headstart has allowed them to get some quality titles out there, wheras we are still waiting for the really hot ps3 stuff
Re: wow!
Regard less of wether or not you think it is "useless" information it is still a 260% rise in sales. Which is a good thing for Microsoft. The fact that it bouced up so much is what they are cheering about.
Re: wow!
The previous statement from Chart Track had the Wii outselling the PS3 by more than 6 to 1 and 360 by 4 to 1 so do the maths and the 360 was already outselling the PS3 by 1.5 to 1 or 33%, add the 260% rise to that and it's clearly thrashing the PS3 by some distance while not quite catching the Wii, although the launch of Halo may give the 360 that extra spike.
Re: wow!
ohhh.... Steve... you are so a troll fanboy, also you still need math lessons.
compare halo (video game) with spider, pirates (movies) is only PR, old ****py microsoft PR.
since you like trashing the PS3 all over the web steve, let me ask you one question...
similar scenarios, one cant be wrong without implicate the other are wrong too.
a) PS3 was the biggest console launch ever in UK, sales drop 80% the weef after launch.
b) Halo 2 was the biggest launch ever in entertainment history, sales drop more than 90% the week after launch.
so IS WRONG or IS RIGTH? you cant win both this time.
time i pre-answer questions that may croos you mind.
a) "you cant compare console sales with games sales" oh but you can compare movie sales with game sales, rigth?
b) "even after the drop sales in 1st week halo become biggest seller, not the case of the ps3" well, biggest seller in the xbox (and many were sold in bundle consoles) but yet less half of xbox owners buy it, and it never get close to the 10 million sales, many games have outsold halo 2, line any grand theft auto, mario, even gran turismo. Tell me at the end of the of the ps3 life wich console sold more.
c) "wathever, xbox 360 is outselling the PS3" Well, the last full year all was hearing "the xbox 360 was the leading next-generation" now that the Wii has outsold the xbox 360, you better cheer this one, because by this month next year you will only cheer that the xbox 360 was the first next geneation console to enter the market (dreamcast anyone) after the ps3 pass the xbox 360 in sales.
d) "Halo 3 will be a console seller" Mmmm, i dont think so, microsoft believe the same about halo 2, and it wasnt, remember that 2004 winter, microsoft was so disapointed with halo 2 not selling systems that christmas, that just a couple of months after halo 2 release they announce the xbox 360
e) "believe wath you wan, you are wrong im rigth" im happy to bet my money is the other way, how many money you want to losse... want to bet that halo 3 will not sale more than the 8 millions halo 2 sold, Im in. what about microsoft selling less consoles the full 2007 vs full 2006, in that i bet more money if you call it. ok, you may think i betting on sure things, what abou it, i bet microsoft announce the NEXT XBOX by the E3 next year, AAhhh you didnt see that coming.
Re: wow!
jamie you little twit. why do you think you deserve more than 3 lines on any forum.
Re: wow!
what are you talking about.. Halo 2 was a console seller.. why else would microsoft pay 4 milion dollars inadverti*****ts...
Re: wow!
@jaime
I don't know what you're smoking but my comment listed Chart Track's sales data not mine, you're comment on the other hand was some kind of incomprehendable fanboy rant, as for your "since you like trashing the PS3 all over the web" comment, has it ever occurred to you that Steve is a pretty common name and it's unlikely to be me you've seen "trashing the PS3 all over the web" especially since I rarely leave comments, I don't own a Wii, Xbox or Ps3 yet and am still deciding which console to buy, hence my interest in how well they are selling. It's like me travelling abroad and meeting someone who says "oh you're from England you must know my uncle Sid"

Re: wow!
What will be interesting when Halo3 launches is to see how many Halo2 fanatics that have (up to this point) been able to feed their Halo addiction with an old XBox will finally make the jump to 360. Personally I know at least 4-5 people that haven't ever felt strongly enough about any 360 games that they bit the bullet and upgraded, but they're ALL planning on doing it by the end of the year. As all players start to move to Halo3 online, my guess is that the hold-outs will almost all beg borrow or steal to finally switch to next gen.
The more people that GO next gen (PS3 or 360, I consider the Wii to be the late-comer king of the previous generation with a neat controller) the better for everyone, as more publishers will commit to more great games. I worry a little bit about Sony EVER catching up at this point as all the momentum seems to be behind 360 at this point outside of Japan anyway.
Re: wow!
Who the F__k was that 'Jamie' guy?! Everybody else here had something useful to say! I agree with the guy that said Halo 2 hold-outs will switch in time. As for Japan - let them ddo what they want - it's not killing M$ at the moment is it?
Re: wow!
i think uniformlely everyone agrees gamie is stupid.
I have a premium im selling it to my Godson for 200 bucks im flippin that into an elite, my best friend can't find a elite to buy otherwise he would have one my girlfriends best friend just got a elite for her boyfriend 2 PS3 owners at work are buying 360's my ex-girlfriend just got one, half of the guys at coolage got one in the last week or are getting it in this month the guy that does the night fraight at wallmart i talked to can't quite put his finger on why the 360's keep sellin out he said its probably because its cheaper than the WII's ... this stated i know 20 % of these people are getting halo3 ASAP first game we'r talking the other 80 % already had the game PIF (paidinfull) about a year now before buying the console before anything its own hype will sell the **** out of this. its like the super bowl no one cares who's playing the stadium sells out regardless. so im not sayin this is the nail in the coffin for PS3 or WII or anything im just saying its making the 360's pimp hand talk and theres a lobster flying accross the Pieceof****3's fan boy armies face here in about 3 weeks. i mean really fall of humanity? metroid what?
