Nintendo has sold 9.02m consoles globally, says Japanese economic authority
According to a report by Japanese economics resource Nikkei Net Kansai, the Wii has overtaken the Xbox 360 as the current leader of the next-generation console war – the first time Nintendo has reclaimed the title since the SNES days.
As translated by MCV sister site Develop, Nikkei has brought together the figures from Enterbrain, NPD and GfK – sales tracking agencies of Japan, America and Germany respectively.
According to these stats, Wii has sold 9.02m units throughout the three territories as of the end of July (August for Enterbrain’s figures), eclipsing Microsoft’s global sales of 8.8m despite being launched a year later.
Sony’s PS3, launched in the US and Japan within a few days of the Wii, has only sold 3.7m in the same timeframe.
Nikkei Net Kansai’s report claims that two-thirds of 360 sales have been in the US, with the Japanese performance still failing to meet expectation. In contrast, the Wii has sold almost uniformly across the territories, despite lacking the technical clout of the cutting-edge PS3 and Xbox 360.

ehm?
although i fully support Nintendo in the choices they have made, and aside from that am really happy for the succes they have now with the Wii, I just can't stop thinking that aside from the way we use a controller to play the games on the Wii it still isn't really next gen...
Well done Nintendo!
Whilst I don't currently own any of the three next-gen consoles its nice to see that traditional styled gaming-albeit with a new controller- can still have an impact. Both Microsoft and Sony, (paricularly), would do well to take note.
As a gamer I just won't one thing-Games. Couldn't care less about blu-ray or HDDVD,
Good for you Nintendo.

And the way we use a controller to play games on Wii isn't next generation in your opinion? I think it's a generation ahead of it's competitors, and note these words. Motion sensing gaming is the future. ;)
Bah to Wii not being next gen. 360 & PS3 are current generation, and Wii is the only real next generation console. We will, and you will, with time, see that the gfx really isn't everything. It's the gameplay that matters, and that shows in sales figures even now - no doubt the price tag being a major part of them too.
As whole, Wii has done a great job opening people's eyes to alternative ways of gaming, and to the future of home entertainment.
