Tesco and Asda go early on Halo 3 too?

Trade sources suggest that two leading supermarkets have broken the street date on triple-a title

Several readers contacted MCV to state that some Asda and Tesco stores have started selling Halo 3 early (game and receipt pictured). The latest twist in the tale comes just a few days after Argos went early, blaming the error on its store staff.

“We’re talking about very, very few copies. It was an error on our part and we have instructed our staff that it musn’t go on sale until the official release date,” a Tesco spokesperson told MCV.

An Asda spokesperson added: “Nothing has been sold early and we have not followed Tesco or Argos in selling Halo 3 early. We are strictly keeping to the Wednesday release date.”

I have recently emigrated to the states, and working in the Game industry for 14 yrs now seeing this happening time and time again in the UK is nothing new! If anything it's publicity for the supermarkets. In the States, they never break on anything, titles come out on Tuesdays over here and when shipped to the stores the outer cardboard boxes scream don't put on sale until the 25th..(In halo's case), so even if the staff are not aware of the product, they have this strict on sale notice thats adhered to at all times! Take note someone...

It looks like Asda's playing ball. Just went in there and tried my luck, but the old woman serving at the entertainment counter politely told me to come back on Wednesday.

I notice Tesco didn't state how many copies they sold early.
Simply saying " Very, very, few copies"

What does that mean?! If the game is expected to sell 1Million Copies by the end of the year, very few could be 20'000!

It's also interesting to note Gems silence on this issue. Why were Indies required to sign a street date agreemment when they won't receive the game until the day before release. By the time they've unboxed their stock, and sorted for pre-orders they won't have time to sell any early!

If this is true, then its a disgrace. If it is then I wonder if these 2 supermarkets have flexed thier financial muscle. Its a dengerous situation to start messing with street dates. What can be said about the lovely Microsoft delivering all the stock so early, how kind of you. Its like telling a child not to touch, greedy and stupid, what next!

The Black Parade

Microsoft put yourself in the shoes of the Indy Market, the people that started this whole gaming industry before the almighty Xbox was even a thought! If they can’t make money on the biggest game released yet I’m not being funny but it does not look good. How about someone at Microsoft grows a backbone and stands up to the big guys just like Levis did. Otherwise fine let the market kill its self let your game just become a product sitting in between the sanitary towels and cheap DVD's....And Breath!

Then after all these street date breakages, we recive our stock today and 70% of our Limited Edition versions are damaged. Either one or BOTH disks are loose in the tin, and have been heavily scratch in transit due to the bad case design. WORTH CHECKING YOUR STOCK PRIOR TO SELLING, luckily we did, as we may have had stacks of people returning them tomorrow !!!

Who cares anyway?
Release dates were designed to protect businesses, show a united front, show order and cosistancy. LMAO All that went out of the window when the industry sold itself to the supermarkets a few years ago.
All sensible indies who operate within 10 miles of a 'superstore' should have known better than to have stocked it anyway, knowing full well it would be cheaper there than from official distribution!! and (as has turned out) would be sold early. Publishers.....Reap the whirlwind you created!!
..and lets not be having any surprise or sympathy as the giants of retail scrap like vultures over a rotting carcass!

I couldnt agree more with "the black parades" comment.
The only part of that statment i would change would be, the industry needs to grow a back bone not just microsoft.
I have been in this industry for over 25 years now, i have seen its highs and more recently the lows. Unless a backbone is grown the indies who started this industry rolling will no longer exist, just take a look at the indies that have dissapeared in the past couple of years.
The problem is "DO THE PUBLISHERS ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THE INDEPENDANTS, IM NOT SURE IF IM HONEST !!".

Replys buy all would make an interesting read.
