£299 PS3 imminent?

Claims that Sony will shortly launch cut-price 40GB model in the UK

Consumer site CVG is reporting that “several” off-the-record sources have assured it that Sony is preparing to counter the massive hype generated by Microsoft’s release of Halo 3 by launching a stripped down 40GB version of the PS3 for £299 in the UK.

Sky News is apparently reporting that the unit will be missing several of the features currently boasted by the 60GB model – such as backwards compatibility and USB ports.

Meanwhile, Next-Gen reports that Sony is turning to PlayStation2 producer FoxConn to produce the new hardware.

How can they take away backwards compatability when its built into the firmware, and how would you recharge the control pads if there were no USB ports

Exactly.

It doesn't matter if the PS3 was £200 the thing is yeah loads of people will buy it but they will NOT have anywhere near the awesome selection of games the Xbox 360 offers.

There is a major lack of quality games on all 3 systems; just the odd title here and there and any new or original idea just gets ripped off by the other 2. Why would anyone buy any of them at the moment; maybe in another 12 months there will be some real quality out there; consoles only really start hitting their potential 3 years into their life and when they get down to nearly £100 in price which none of these are close to.

Wouldn't suprise me at all if the ps2 stills come out on top this Christmas because what parent wants to be spending £200 on a console and then £40 on the lastest game when you can get it for half the price and the biggest catalogue of games there is?

Once a console hits the 50million mark in sales then they can start to say that they're winning the war.

The microsoft sony war is just stupid at the moment; they're argueing over consoles that don't even register on about 90% of people's radar at the moment; just the hard core gamers which are likely to buy all 3 consoles anyway.

So you talk smack about M$ offering a watered down version with the Core pack, now you are giving your customers a lesser machine?

And you say rumble is last-gen, then change your mind and bring it back because of customer feedback.

It must be painful working at Sony these days, and the worrying ting is they have nothing in the future that is interesting on the games front.
