UK sales of PS3 and 360 neck-and-neck in 2007

But 360 shifting more units week-on-week since introduction of Elite

Hardware statistics from ChartTrack show PS3 and Xbox 360 are within a hair’s breadth of one another in terms of total calender year sales to date.

Xbox 360 enjoyed a 12-week headstart on PS3 before it was launched on March 23rd, but both systems have near identical sales figures for the first 38 weeks of the year.

However, 55 per cent of all PS3 sales came in the first four weeks after the console’s launch date.

Xbox 360 is still benefiting from its price drop and the introduction of the Elite model last month, when it enjoyed a 260 per cent jump in sales. Since then (week 34), it has consistently sold more units than PS3 week-on-week.

ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch believes that the price of Sony’s machine and lack of killer app software will see Microsoft’s format pull ahead in the closing months of 2007.

“Prior to week 34, it’s fair to say that Xbox 360 sales were verging on the unimpressive,” he told MCV. “But since Elite was released and the 360 price drop has kicked in, Xbox is outselling PS3 week-on-week.

“The consoles are at different stages of their lifecycles, and long-term the sales balance could easily shift. But unless a PS3 price cut comes in – and after Tokyo Games show it looks unlikely – it’s difficult to see the 360 not selling more by the end of the year.

“It had Halo 3 arriving this week, is cheaper and has a raft of software after being on the market for over two years. PS3 is still in its relative infacy.”

For crying out loud man, the PS3 has only been out in Europe for what, 7 months? In a year from now you will be laughing at this report as the 360 will have had its *** handed to it.

Hes not talking about total sales figures of both, just the sales of this year when the ps3 came out in europe. The sales figures are not very good for a brand new console and espcially one that was meant to carry on in the success of the ps2.

I'm sorry, but with the European titles always being released AFTER several months of us having them. Ps3 will not take off until 2009 over there. Look at the real trends. This article is not not mislead unless you can't read, or are a loser fanboy of either system.

I knew the first response to this article would be a Sony fanboy....am sure more are yet to come.

I think it's interesting this whole console war and associated facts and figures.
I do wonder with online gaming becoming more and more popular if the importance of getting an installed user base is even more imperative than in past generations. This is due to the fact that many people may now opt for the console with the bigger online community, especially if friends etc are online (ie somebody that would usually opt for a PS3 may instead chose a 360 because his or her friends are already on XBox Live and hence want to be able to play online with them).
I know HOME may swing this in Sony's favour next year, but to be honest am not yet convinced on what HOME has to offer except for trendy looking avatar's I have no interest in. Aparrently its online integration does excel above XBOX Live in games like Burnout: Paradise, but am not sure of the full extent of this and do not think this is due to HOME, but is an integral feature of the PSN itself.

Anyways...enough rambling.

x360 is non-existent in EU and JAPAN and most parts of EU. In Spain last week x360 sold just 2 consoles.

in japan and middle east no even knows about the x360. by the way FIFA ps3 version has already overtaken x360 in terms of sales .

By the end of this year along with another prcie cut.....ps3 will formally kill garbage box 360 in EU

I'm sorry but I own a PS3 & don't have a 360 but the 360 does have it's own advantage's as does the PS3 in the End I do believe that the PS3 will overtake the 360 but it will take a while for this to happen as price is seen as a big barrier for consumers of any region.

Im rooting for the PS3 to win but in the end Fanboy comments like yours really aren't needed if you think I'm protecting scottmpamp all I can say about that is that his comment has some relevance.

In the end lets just end all the fanboy comments and keep to the facts

agreed - there is definately room for both the 360 & PS3. I own a 360 and not a PS3 not because I am a Xbox/Microsoft lover, but because the 360 came out first and had pretty good games from the start. Right now the PS3 does not have anything extra to offer (the graphics arent that much better at the moment, and good graphics doesnt mean a good game anyways). The best part about the next generation games is less obvious things like enemy AI etc which the 360 handles very well. When the PS3 has games I want to play I will consider buying that also.
Why do PS3 fanboys hate Halo/Gears of War etc purely because they are not on Sony ? These are great games and I would want to play great games regardless of the console they are on.
There are only a small minority of games on PS3 right now I would play, but no killer games (yet). i might just buy a PS3 when something good like MGS4 drops however (as well as the price !) I wont sit back hating a game and missing out on what it has to offer just because it is on a different console - makes no sense.

Xbox are gonna win this as they have great games. Most PS3 games are ports of the Xbox. Developers prefer programming for 360 as it is easier and straighforward. With the 8 cell processor PS3 has most games only utilise a couple of cells any way to run games so consumers are paying for the six unused cells which is a waste of money.

I think sony should give up.

Interesting that despite the number of big name games on the 360, the PS3 keeps up in sales. The 360 will do well with Halo 3 but once the big games come out for the PS3 in 2008 I think the trend will reverse. People seem to forget that the big selling Playstation franchises like MGS, Final Fantasy and Grand Turismo have yet to come out yet, not to mention a whole slew of new titles.

I forgot Call of Duty 4 for the 360 before.

PS3 lineups look good. Interesting you say MGS is going to be exclusive for the Playstation as the publisher are themselves worried if the PS3 will ever do well. So they might just port MGS over to 360. Also square are worried about the total PS3 sales and you never know if they would do the same for FF.

360 rocks and is the best console in the world.

People seem to forget that the 360 & PS3 are at different stages of their lifecycle. The 360 is further along its product lifecycle, yet still outsells the PS3. However, this all depends on where each of these consoles is placed on the product lifecycle timespan, and it is fair to argue that the 360 is peaking, while the PS3 is still taking off and will eventually reach higher sales. Also, consider sales in the US where it matters - 360 outsells PS3 almost 2:1 last time I read.
People quoting such facts as "PS3 outsells 360 in the middleeast or India etc" like I have seen argued on here are talking rubbish - the console war will not be won in these markets regardless of who sells the most in Iraq/Iran/Saudi Arabia etc. Maybe in 10 years when India/China etc develop further this will be a more valid argument. Not now.

The fact is, the big hitting PS3 games are not out yet, but the 360 also has several high profile games also yet to come. It is really too early to tell, and what declares a console the winner anyways ? When Microsoft/Sony decide to wave the white flag and pull the plug on their console ? Or because one console sold 500k more units at the end than the other console ? Even then you would have to to take other factors such as software sales, online revenues etc into account.

Truth is there wont be a clear winner, and definately not a run away winner like the PS2 was in the last generation. I find much of the industry analyst quotes on here quite irrelevant also, as it was these same people who predicted the Wii was a fad more than 6 months ago, yet the Wii continued to sell strongly during what is traditionally a slow selling period, and shows no sign of letting up. Truth is nobody knows for certain and thats what makes it interesting.

The Wii is not aimed at hardcore gamers. It is aimed at an entirely different market. If it is not for you, then don't buy it. Fact is it is sellin****edload of units week after week after week. If you want first person shooters buy a 360 and not a Wii. Simple.

PS3 IS WORTH THE MONEY

I've got a PS3 an XBOX 360 and a Wii. I like all my console very very much but I think PS3's sales figures will become more and more higher and will over take the XBOX 360 for sure. Most of you will probably disaggree but it's true, let me explain. Now as many computer geeks like me will already know that XBOX 360's graphics are at the end of evolvement they are not going to get better then Gears of War. It would not be able to go higher due to Microsoft deciding to stick with the origional DVD-ROM discs. If game designers for XBOX 360 had plans to make (or try) to make an ever better graphics game, better then Gear of War, It probably would work but the storyline or should I say hours of gameplay will be extremely short. And I don't think many gamers would be happy with this. Gear of War is a very short game as it is anyway.
Now let me move on to the PS3. PS3 games have only just entered the world of gaming and they already look good. Take Uncharted : Drake's Fortune for example. This is a very early game for PS3 and is just as good or maybe better graphics than Gears of War.
Now some of you are maybe thinking what the heck am I going on about.
Well as many of you probably already know the PS3 is packed with the amazing BLU-RAY disc. Now what this means for gamers is that games are going to get better for PS3 mainly because the cell proccessor and the amazing amount of memory storage that you can put on the BLU-RAY disc. All of this power and enough memory allowing game designer to create worlds and amazing epic storylines with out worrying about how much storage can be fitted onto a disc.(Unlike XBOX 360's old DVD disc)
Incase you didn't know a single layered DVD disc can only hold up 4.7GB yet a DVD daul layer can hold up 8GB, this still isn't really enough storage for amazing ever evolving graphic games. But a BLU-RAY disc for example on a single layer can hold up to 25GB (which is very good and reliable) but it get even better. A BLU-RAY daul layer disc can hold up an amazing 50GB.
Now I hope i've explained enough for poeple that don't understand that PS3 is the future and XBOX 360 will not get any better.
Even better news is the in the UK a new 40GB hard drive PS3 is going to be released at £299 which is saving alot more then a £424 PS3.
EVERYONE PLEASE CATCH THE NEXT-GEN FLEW AND RELISE THAT PS3 IS THE RIGHT WAY TO GO!!!

Thank you for reading!

@Sean: You simply have no idea how console development actually works. Textures, etc don't take up very much space on storage, in fact none of the PS3 games to date have gone beyond the DVD storage limitations wasting all that storage for Bluray. MGS may take advantage of the space but only for creating movies and prerendered cinema, not actual gameplay itself. If you look at games like Bioshock and the upcoming Mass Effect you will realize that developers are still pushing the envelope of graphical standards on the xbox 360 well beyond Gears of War. Can you name a single game on the PS3 to date that has achieved even Gears of War level visuals? Not one. Not even Heavenly Sword (which frankly is only a slightly better looking version of God of War).

Finally, you are welcome but that was a complete waste of my time reading your uninformed gibberish.

That's all completly wrong i'm sorry to say. Now for example. If you watch the trailer for Mass Effect you will notice that characters clothes textures are very pixiley and weak. And the background are not 3D you instantly tell that they are computer generated backdrops. If this kind of game was on PS3 the backgrounds would be completly 3D with real time simulated objects. You can do a survey if you want for this, ask everyone if they think Gears of War is more real then Mass Effect. Many will say Gears of War. And also because of the limited amount of freedom on a DVD-ROM the Mass Effect game is rather slow in gameplay. This is due to the limited amount of frames per second and the old school DVD. Xbox 360 will soon halt in developing wise. But PS3 will keep moving. Watch Killzone 2 for PS3. PS3 has only been out not even a year and that's one of the reallest games ever made. It's has been awarded only for it's trailer. That's how good it is.
There are so many amazing game's coming out for PS3 for example Final Fantasy XIII (and verses XIII) Ratchet and Clank Future, The Getaway, Folklore, GT, Home, Uncharted, Infamous ect. There would have been many more if Microsoft didn't buy out most of Playstations exclusives. Soon game developers will get tired of the restriction of space and freedom on old DVD-ROM discs and will turn to the BLU-RAY witch is only on PS3. Microsoft tryed to buy out SQARE ENIX's Final Fantasy. But the honoring Japanese company stood stong with PS3 (Knowing the freedom and power with the cell chip and BLU-RAY disc). Know i'm a really big fan of Xbox 360. I'm looking forward to games like Eternal Sonata and Crash of the Titans ect. But i'm just speaking the real truth about PS3 and why it's WORTH THE MONEY!

Ppl like being racist over other consoles :D As for I, I like the ps3 and 360. I have played Gears of War, Forza pgr3,etc. And i thought games were great. I saw the Xbox live and the option, i thouht that was good. But look, just because the games are bad on the console, doesnt mean the console is bad. It is just that ppl want to be rich, and want money like theres no 2 morow.

But seriously everything has advantages and disadvantages. THe Wii has barely any really good games other than, zelda, metroid and Wii Sports. But they are all fun because of the motion sensing. They arent good games, but fun.
Am I making sense? I have no idea.

My point is, everything should deserve a chance and shouldnt be judged because its sales aren good.

I don't know know why people are laying into Sean he's just saying Blu-ray is the pretty much the future. The disc has 25gig of storage. Also is capable of 50gig, this means all you developers out there will have more space to work with, surely that can only be a good thing? A lot of people are still jumping on the band wagon that PS3 is too expensive...its not now it's about the same price as a 360 elite.
Here is where I predict people will get mad, I wouldn't class the 360 as a next gen console, in the same way lots people don't class the wii as one. Next gen console are meant to use top notch technology the best there is...X Box haven't done that. Yes X Box 360 may have good games for the minute but by the end of 2008 it will be struggling to keep up. The wii will probs still be selling strong because the concept is a winner. It's only gonna be a two horse race this time next year...PS3 and Wii. Please don't bombard me with hate this isn't to insight anything, this is just what I personally think will happen I completely agree with Sean.

Sure we dont have vibrations but after 5 minutes you cant feel it any more so i dont see why its badly needed. Id prefer some extra control without vibration myself. It is true that the ps3 sales are starting to become higher and higher and the Wii has been outsold but im holding back my joy for a little while longer just incase the 360 has a surprise title or the Wii.
I believe the success of the ps3 is not dependant on blue-ray or MGS4, i think its more that Sony has a huge reputation of outstanding quality, top selling consoles, televisions, dvd players, blue ray players the whole lot. and the fact the ps3 is an incredible console only adds to they joy. It****ging behind at the moment but the 360 is coming to its peak of visuals and performance and ultimately the dvd will hold it back, the Wii i think has had its moment and is starting to fade out a little now. I am keeping my ps3 but im open to buying an xbox 360 i***ame comes out which is brilliant, ive played halo 3, gears of war, oblivion and so on but none of them grabbed me in a way motorstorm did, its different. It was a risk yes but Sony pulled it off. I bought the ps3 because of my experience with the ps2 and the fact at the time devil may cry was exclusive and was saving up for an xbox 360 elite.

I know im probably going to be hunted down and beaten to death with the soggy end of my own arm but i think the ps3 will be the winner by the time the next-next gen consoles are released.

i have just bought a ps3 and i have to say i am impressed, the good news is that with its technology the limitations of this machinery is nearly endless. i do think its a bit geeky people squablling though on which is the best platform, reminds me of my younger years should i get a commodore 64 or a spectrum 48,. the deal is with sony you get all the mod cons for one price blu ray hdtv aswell as dvd and the ability to play my back catolouge of ps1 and ps2 games.
with each company competing there can only be one winner thats us the consumer.
By the way the wii looks fun but it i think the novelty will wear off plus the graphics look outdated and a little ***.

Thats put me off Rock Band. Nelv, do you really need to use 'clever' language and 'big' words? I have an IQ of 172 and would rather read simplified english after a long days studying. XD Anyway, if the controllers on a PS3 are so unresponsive, why don't you put up the sensitivity of the controller?

On the verge

It's my birthday next month and I'm going to get one of the consoles but I'm not sure which. As many of you have said, there are advantages and disadvantages to both. I'm leaning towards the 360 at the moment partly because most of my gaming friends have chosen it over the PS3 but also because I like the line-up more.

Final Fantasy lost me a long time ago; Square hasn’t delivered a stellar instalment since X. Seriously you hear people saying their favourite FF and it’s VII or X or sometimes VI, IX or VIII but rarely is it anything that came after. No one even tries to pretend Advent Children lived up to expectations, or that it’s as good as its predecessor. Besides that, Square’s earliest date for XIII is late 2008 with Versus set to follow months afterwards. Buying a system now for a game that’s unlikely to see the light of day for a year or more (Square rarely stick to early deadline predictions) doesn’t seem wise to me.

I’ve never been a big player of racing games and whilst GT’s fun, it’s not going to sell a system to me, not on its own. Admittedly, I’ll miss Metal Gear Solid but being that it’s on its last instalment, it’s not a franchise anymore. It’s just one game, not a series, that I’ll miss out on and I’m not going to buy a console for just one game

The biggest blow dealt to Sony in my case was Capcom taking its pillar franchises multi-platform. I love Resident Evil, I love Devil May Cry even more and DMC4 is due out a week or two before my birthday. Then there’s Lost Odyssey, a 360 exclusive JRPG made by the creator of the Final Fantasy series is due out three days after (my birthday). You can complain all you want about disk space but really, that doesn’t change much since developers can do what Mistwalker have done, what Square have done since FFVII and spread the game across several disks. As long as the game’s fun to play, I have no problem.

People can go on and on about the specs and graphics but what gamers are interested in is games. The Playstation 2 ruled the market despite being the weaker piece of hardware because it had an insanely good line-up but this time, games predicted to be awesome new PS3 system sellers, like Heavenly Sword, have failed to impress and big franchises have gone multi-platform this gen. Microsoft has more exclusives, very strong ones too. Like Nintendo, Microsoft has the advantage of owning its biggest exclusives and this not only saves them money on exclusivity contracts, it also gives them a big advantage in terms of line-up.
