Fils-Aime: We won’t meet Xmas Wii demand

NoA president also questions Halo 3’s credentials as a system seller

Speaking to the Mercury News, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has stated that after seemingly overcoming the stock shortages that plagued retail for so long, the huge level of demand anticipated for Wii this Christmas will lead to shortages once more.

“We're working very hard to make sure that consumers are satisfied this holiday, but I can't guarantee that we're going to meet demand,” Fils-Aime stated. “As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record we won't.

“What I can tell you is that typically, our inventory is lasting a day. The issue is not a lack of production. The issue is we went in with a curve that was aggressive, but the demand has been substantially more than that. And the ability to ramp up production and to sustain it is not a switch that you flick on.

“The only other pragmatic advice is that we're aware of the situation, and we're working very hard to address it. Believe me, I'm constantly pushing for more capacity and more volume.”

In other comments, Reggie also questioned the ability of Microsoft’s recent smash-hit Halo 3 to help boost sales of the Xbox 360.

“Will they sell a lot of software? Certainly,” he added. “Will it sell hardware? I think it's an open question. I think that the Halo 3 consumer already has the hardware, because they're playing Bioshock and Crackdown and a variety of games that are, in the end, quite similar: first-person shooter experience, multiplayer capable online. Tell me what's new?”

What's new?

Thing is, Halo has never been about doing something new. It's always been about taking what is around and refining it to the point of perfection. Now I'm not saying any of the Halo series is perfect but because of striving to perfect what is around today and not trying to do something for the first time and having the inevitable oversights, it's as perfect as we are ever likely to see games...

Atleast people have a good selection of games to play on the 360. The Wii at present has what? Wii sports, yay.

So, to paraphrase his second paragraph there - 'The issue is not a lack of production....... it's just that we can't make enough'. Have I got that right?

@3. I think he meant that its an issue of not being able to produce enough rather than production not being at full capacity...

@1: The first halo was about doing new things (good driving in a fps, the shield system, fun physics), but I do agree that the 2 sequels are more refinements to the genre than anythign new.

@ the article: so people who are going to play halo 3 already have the console and at least 2 other games that are "similar" (yes there is shooting involved, but all 3 are just a little bit different).
And that is worse than people rushing out to buy a wii with its free game. Most casual gamers I know are happy with wii sports, but don't buy anything else. Is that really the way to sell a console?

I have no idea why it just posted my post again!? Back on topic - It leaves a bad taste when one of the bigwigs from the major companies has a sly dig at the other ones. It makes it worse when it's obviously untrue. It makes him look foolish. I own 3 shops and for example in one of them we usually sell 3-4 360s per week. Last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we sold 5 per day all with Halo 3. In recent days the trend has continued and will continue upto and beyond Christmas. Customers who haven't got a 360 yet have seen the Halo phenomenon and are wanting to try it.

How anyone can say Halo 3 won't sell consoles is beyond me, especially when that person is highly respected in the videogame industry. He would have gained more respect apologising for the severe lack of Wii's from day one and telling us and the public, who are clamouring for them what they are doing to rectify the situation so that I and my staff at the sharp end stop disappointing 20-30 customers a day!

@7 - I think Reggie means that people who wanted Halo 3 were aware of the X360 and what it offered already and would have bought the console at some point anyway. People who were not aware Halo 3 aren't suddenly going into your shops not knowing about the system it's on are they?

Contrast this to purchasers who know that they want a Wii but are completely unaware of the other titles that are on offer.

5 a day with Halo 3 released compared to 20-30 (requests) a day with no significant releases for a good few weeks isn't really comparable.

You will get Wii stock in the week leading up to Harvest Moon like the other stores will. Not sure why they seem to be holding stock back, maybe they want Metroid to be a number 1 selling game.

@ article - I am surprised that Nintendo are still ramping up production, and are letting so many Wiis sit unsold on shelves in Japan when the UK is crying out for stock.
