PS3 price drop at last – in Italy

Sources reveal 40GB PS3 is to retail at €399 in Italy – is a UK cut next?

MCV media partner Gamestore Magazine reports that from October 10th Italian gamers will have the choice of a new 40GB PS3 for €399 or the starter pack which includes two games and an extra pad for €499.

The cheaper option works out at around £275 in Sterling, and will have tongues wagging as to the likelihood of a 40GB model and price cut here in the UK.

The news from Italy comes as persistent internet rumours continue to suggest that a cut price 40GB model is set for release in France and Australia.

So no 80gb in Europe but a cheaper 40gb...Wow the 20gb in difference is sure costing Sony a lot of money eh? And having to remove stuff at that? Wow.

I havea 60gb PS3 collects dust and then I clean it and its nice and shiny hardly use it but I like my technology.

But when it comes down to gaming the Xbox 360 is king - you are better off purchasing an Xbox 360 Elite with a 120gb hard drive, HDMI cables and headset included!

If Sony does not follow suit in all Western European countries, they're likely to sell less consoles than they could. Many consumers will be aware of the Italian price drop thanks to the magic of the internet, and may put off purchase (and rightly so). Between the bundle with 60 GB and 40 GB, I believe consumers are more likely to want 40 GB and the choice of games.

dear gecko

your comment is rather sad. surely it is best both companies (your masters/sony) expand their user base and sell more consoles. do you want to be playing an fps in 5 years time with a fat italian man in a blue suit?

someone needs to design a new filter for such comments.

I really hope this price cut comes to light in the UK too. The U.S. gamers still moan about the price. They got a mammoth 80 GB console and they still are not happy. We in the UK pay £425.00 for the console, so I think the cheaper model will be excellent. I can see the Playstation 3 selling more at this price, believe me many are waiting for the Playstation 3 to fall
down in price.

i agree you have to buy network adapter, playncharge, xbox live, extra wireless pad, hd drive etc etc, sonys online needs sorting out voice chat etc, but it does need a killer app, its no good having Unreal 3 next year,Killzone 2, MGS4 next year, it needs exclussves now, and the US will always complain they dont know how good they have it, PS3 needs exclussive new software, essential games, like xbox had gears and of course halo3, which i thought wasnt that great but hey..

Halo 3 is pretty good, especially if you play online (courtesy of live), I too want a PS3 but at the right price and game (metal gear)

What Sony is doing is test the market for demand in a country which is very price sensitive. If it proves positive, this 40 GB version will certainly roll-out in every country in Europe before November 20th so Sony doesn't make tife too easy for MS this Xmas. Anyway, the battle will be over whenever MGS etc... comes out early next year.
