Retailer moves quickly to applaud Sony’s decision
In what is sure to be the first in a long line of retailers praising Sony for cutting the price of PS3, GAME has welcomed the platform holder’s decision.
GAME Commercial Director Tricia Brennan said:
“We feel that this is a very positive move from Sony. The price reduction will make it easier for even more customers to enjoy the incredible gaming experience you get with a PS3.”
“Video games appeal to a wide variety of consumers now, so everyone at GAME will be working tirelessly to keep the shelves full and make sure that customers have all of the advice and products they need in the run-up to Christmas.
“There are more games consoles available than ever before, and today’s price cut means they all represent amazing value for money when you consider the incredible technology and sheer volume of entertainment that they offer.
“Players enjoy singing, dancing, playing musical instruments, competing in dozens of interactive sports, and exploring vast environments using modern day consoles, and our customers will be spoiled for choice this Christmas.”
Sony today announced that it would drop the UK price of the 60GB PS3 on October 10th by around £75. The console will be sold for £349, along with a SIXAXIS controller and two first party titles.
New to the market on the same day will be the 40GB model. It will retail at £299 - the same price Xbox 360 Elite – but feature only two USB 2.0 ports. It will also no longer include the multi memory card port and will lack backwards compatibility with PS2 games.

Re: Game applauds neutered console
The lower price will sell more consoles, simple.
I will buy one when metal gear comes out.
Re: Game applauds neutered console
i bought my ps3 on 28th september... its only been a week and now i find out they announced a £75 price cut... *******s :(
GAME relieved?
I think GAME are relieved that the price cut has been announced, to be honest.
A great number of developers have been asking for it and so has the retailers, like GAME, HMV, Argos etc.
I went into the latter's Oxford Street (London) branch a couple of weeks ago and curiously asked how were the PS3 sales going and I got "no one's buying it!" as a reply from the guy behind the counter. Nothing surprising then.
I'm not sure if the price cut and the newly announced model will make much sense to both retailers and consumers, though. It feels like Sony is giving retailers a chance to flush the 60GB SKU because they've been struggling to sell it.
The move is more like to prepare the UK/Euroland market for the 80GB 'high end' model, as the 60GB model disappears; a reversal of what they did in North America. And before Xmas, the latter territory will get the cut-down (because that's what it is, a cut-down) 40GB machine.
I personally think that for what they offer, in terms of specification and all those things that have been removed, it's still not worth the price of £300 or £350, for that matter.
The simple reason is not because there are (arguably) not enough Killer Apps out for it or that the emulation has been removed. It's simply because Sony and consumers are putting too much emphasis on its BluRay ability, when really, most households are still using standard television sets (without HD Ready capabilities), nor do they posses the rest of the 'cinematic' experience, either.
Check this one of many such reports: http://dtg.org.uk/news/news.php?id=1877" onclick="window.open ( this.href ); return false;" class="comment_url" >http://dtg.org.uk/...=1877
Although it's upbeat about HDTV sales, it's still realistic about uptake, stating that "only one-third of American households with HD-capable TV sets are actually using them to watch high-definition programming." So, I don't think Sony or consumers can say the price is justified because it has a BD-ROM.
Microsoft have taken a completely dead approach to this, by sticking with an old technology (DVD) and only tentatively backing HD-DVD (although Microsoft Corporation is fully behind it), but their reasons are completely different. They will no doubt leap-frog the PS3 in about 3 years or so with an even more powerful console, possibly the X360 Plus, which will be fully backwards compatible (and I don't mean just games, I mean in terms of programming it) but allow developers to build on the current success and technology of the X360 by making it more powerful and a better graphics controller. In other words, they might well take the PC approach to their future designs, because they come from that background.
In order to understand the games industry, you have to look at who is offering what. And we have two (main) contenders that come from different backgrounds and it's a real fight that they're trying to both win in their own style, with Nintendo currently having soar-away success, if they're not too careful...!
To conclude, I'd say the recent announcement by Sony is more of a welcome to retailers with festering stock and to boost PS3 sales for Sony, rather than doing consumers a favour, as I still don't see value in the price or any compelling Killer Apps.
Anyways...
It is true that Sony seem to be pushing the blu-ray side of things rather than gaming but its good to see that they are offering 2 free games with the 60gb the model that they are looking to phase out which is a big dissapointment.
Considering what the Xbox 360 has vs the PS3 I think the PS3 might see a huge hardware sales rise but a huge huge loss as well in profits but with the 360 having much better games, online and graphics I am sure the 360 will do much better especially with games like PGR4, Mass Effect that are soon to be out.
Re: Anyways...
As a retailer, we've already had people asking about if the new lower price PS3 rumours are true and when can they get one. This is parents thinking about Xmas and young adults (18 - 30s) with disposable income. Xbox sales are at an all time low and the interest isn't there anymore.
The HD size of the PS3 (or even XBox) clearly doesn't matter to the average buyer. The brand name clearly does. And also the Hi Def facilities (Blu Ray and HDMI) also appear more important. I was slightly shocked to find the new versions aren't including B/C - but when you read comments above it clearly doesn't matter as most people seem more interested in the new games coming out. And there are plenty of new games for PS3 coming out soon and plenty available already.
If this kind of interest continues in PS3 then as a small retailer I will have to consider seriously reducing our 360 orders and concentrate on the PS3 as that appears to be where the money will be spent this Xmas (well the PS3 and the Wii of course).
Re: Anyways...
Partially to the guy who posted last,
Losing backwards compatability on the 40 GB model is a big loss for a lot of people, myself included, however I feel a lot of non-gamers (mainly the mums and dads buying it for little Johnny for christmas) may need it directly spelling out that it WILL NOT play PS and PS2 games, backwords compatability is jargon, and not everyone understands what it means (obviously most of the people on this site do, but thats not my point!).
Until Sony manage to get a decent model out with backwards compatability for under £300, I'm still not even considering it, AND i'm not touching it until they have some games that I want to play that are exclusives. Mass Effect, Halo 3, Assassins creed, Timeshift, will keep me on the xbox until WAY after that point, not to mention the top quality games coming out next year.
Still, if I were you, I'd stock up as high as possible on the wii and start now. Judging by the prices it's going for on ebay already, it's going to be the best seller this Christmas by far.
